Intercropping Indian Spinach with Okra

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mymensingh during February-May 2000. Okra and Indian spinach were cultivated as monoculture and inter cropped with different plant population combinations (54. 72 and 90 plants per 4 sq m plot). Growth and yield parameters were recorded and the cost-benefit analysis was computed to assess the yield potentiality and profitability of okra and Indian spinach cultivation as sole crop or intercrop. Highly significant variation was found among the treatment combinations for all the parameters recorded Plant height of okra was found maximum (114.23 em) in 02+S3 treatment (36 okra and 54 Indian spinach plants) and that of Indian spinach (47.70 em) in 03+S2 treatment (54 okra and 36 Indian spinach plants). Both the crops produced minimum height in their sole crop treatments. Maximum number of green okra pods was produced by purestands (54 plants/4 sq m) (10.13). Fruit length was the highest in 02+S3 treatment and the minimum in sole crop treatment whereas, the fruit diameter showed the reverse results.

Objectives:

To find out the productivity and profitability of okra-Indian spinach inter cropping.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Different plant populations of sole and inter crop were assigned randomly to the unit plots each of 2 m x 2 m in size. The sole crops and inter crop combinations of okra and Indian spinach made seven treatment combinations which were planted in triplicate on 21 unit plots 0.5 m spaced in between the soil was thoroughly prepared and converted into loose, friable clods to obtain good tilth. All weeds, stubbles and dead roots were removed. At final land preparation, sun furan @ 16 kg/ha was mixed with the soil uniformly for controlling the insects living in soil.Data were collected from ten (10) plants randomly selected from a unit plot of Indian spinach on 2 May 2000. The following plant characters were recorded for the interpretation of the results: Okra .....1. ) Plant height (em) 2) Number of fruits/plant 3) Fruit length (em) 4) Fruit diameter (em) 5) Per cent OM of plant 6) Per cent OM of fruits / 7) Pod yield per plot (4m2) and per hectare.
