An experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to December, 2001 to evaluate the effect of variety, form of urea and nitrogen level on the yield and quality of aromatic rice. The experiment consisted of three varieties viz., BRRl dhan38, BA 5 and Zirashail, two forms of urea viz., prilled urea (PU) and urea supergranules (USG), and three levels of nitrogen viz., 40, 80 and 120 kg ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. BRRl dhan38 produced the highest grain yield (4.89 t ha-1) which was the outcome of the highest number of effective tillers hill-1 and the highest 1000-grain weight. While BR5 produced intermediate grain yield (3.95 t ha-1) which was the consequence of moderate number of effective tillers hill-1, moderate number of grains panicle-1 and also moderate 1000-grain weight. Zirashail showed the worst performance regarding all yield parameters which ultimately led to the lowest grain yield (2.47 t ha-1). USG gave significantly higher grain yield (3.86 t ha-1) and straw yield (7.54 t ha-1 than PU (3.68 t ha-1 and 6.40 t ha-1, respectively). Eighty kg N ha-1 produced the highest number of total tillers hill-1, number of effective tillers hill-1, number of grains panicle-1, 1000-grain weight, grain yield and straw yield. BRRI dhan38 produced the highest protein content (10.16%) and aroma (3.59) which was the outcome of the highest nitrogen content and nitrogen uptake.

To find out the effect of form of urea and nitrogen level on the yield and qualitative characters of different aromatic rice varieties.

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during July-December, 2001. The experimental treatments included: three varieties of transplant aromatic rice viz., BRRI dhan38, BR5 and Zirashail; two forms of urea viz., prilled urea (PU) and urea supergranules (USG), and three nitrogen levels viz., 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha-1 applied as urea. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 10 m2. USG was placed manually at 5-8 cm depth of soil in the middle of four consecutive hills of two adjacent rows at seven days after transplanting. On the other hand, PU was broadcast in three equal splits (1/3 after seedling establishment, 1/3 during active tillering stage and 1/3 at panicle initiation stage). In addition to USG/PU, all the unit plots were equally provided with triple superphosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), gypsum and zinc sulphate @ 100, 50, 62.5 and 10 kg ha-1, respectively. Thirty day old seedlings were transplanted at the rate of 2 seedlings hill-1 with 25 cm spacing between lines and 15 cm spacing between lines and 15 cm spacing between hills. Intercultural operations such as gap filling, weeding, water management and pest management were done as and when necessary. Plots were harvested when some 90% of the seeds became golden yellow in colour. The data on yield contributing characters were recorded from randomly selected hills in each plot excluding border hills and those on grain and straw yields were recorded from the whole plot. Data were analyzed using the "analysis of variance" technique and mean differences were recognized by DMRT.

Among the three varieties studied, BRRI dhan38 performed the best regarding grain yield. The variety had some advantages: BRRI dhan38 matured earlier by some 20 days compared to BR5. Short duration BRRI dhan38 could release land for the accommodation of succeeding crop. USG as a form of urea was more efficient and economic than PU. BRRI dhan38 produced the highest yield with USG at the rate of 80 Kg N ha-1, therefore, the aforesaid dose may be considered as a suitable one from economic point of view. Not only yield but also qualitative characters of BRRI dhan38 was the best among the three varieties.
