Late recession of flood or rain water in the medium highland phase-2 (MHL-2) and medium lowland (MLL) requires appropriate packages of technology for late plated T. Aman for increasing the system productivity. The present study was aimed to intensify and increase the system productivity of the single Boro and Boro-Fallow-late planted T. Aman cropping patterns through the adoption of newly released late planted T. Aman variety, BRRI dhan46 with associate agronomic management practices. The study was conducted in 60 farmers' fields in six blocks under three Upazilas of Gazipur and Mymensingh districts during 2009-2011. Results revealed that 60 to 100% participating farmers were able to increase the cropping intensity from single cropping to double cropping by adopting BRRI dhan46 after Boro rice in the periphery of MLL and increased the system productivity from 52 to 56%. The replacement of local T. Aman varieties by BRRI Dhan46 in Boro-Fallow-Late planted T. Aman cropping patterns increased the grain yield by 25%. More than five times farmers of demo farmers adopted the technology during one year collecting seeds from participating farmers. Moreover, distributing seeds of new rice variety to interested farmers through local elites increased the adoption of the technology.

  Adoption and mitigation technology

To intensify and increase the productivity of Bora-Fallow-Fallow and Boro-Fallow-T. Aman cropping pattern in MHL-2 and MLL through the adoption of late T. Aman based package of technology applying different extension means.

Six blocks were selected to validate the improved late T. Aman technology including rice variety, BRRI dhan46 and agronomic options. Three blocks, namely, Bibadia, Bahadurpur and Maizbari were selected from Kapasia, Mymensingh Sadar and Gafargaon upazila, respectively, dominated by single Boro rice in medium lowland .On the other hand, Anjab, Char Kharicha and Dakkinnapara blocks were selected from the same upazilas having MLL-2 where Boro-Fallow-Late T. Aman with local varieties in Aman season was practiced. Ten farmers of each block adopted improved late T. Aman technology along with the existing practice during 2009 to 2011. The participatory farmers and concerned extension providers at block level were oriented to the package of technology through training and provided the folded brochure on late T. Aman based technology. Quality seeds were provided to the participatory farmers at the rate of 6 kg per farmer for conducting demonstration in 2009. The crop management practices adopted by the farmers in late T. Aman based cropping pattern were recorded.Grain yield was measured from a 10 m2 area in the centre of each plot and expressed as t ha-1 at 14% moisture. The total grain yield of a cropping pattern was used to compare the agronomic productivity. Economic analysis was performed to determine the profitability of validated cropping patterns. The amount of different input required per hectare was calculated and the cost of input for tested packages was estimated based on their local market price. Labor wage for different operations of crop cultivation was captured and included in the total variable cost. The gross  margin for each  treatment  was calculated by deducting the total variable cost from the gross return. The behaviour of the scaling out of the technology was recorded considering the number of farmers adopted the demonstrated technology and amount of seed scaled to the neighbouring farmers from the demo farmers.

The late planted T. Aman, BRRI dhan46 could be adopted as Boro-Fallow-T. Aman pattern in the periphery of medium lowland to increase the productivity of the existing single Boro rice cropping. The replacement of local T. Aman varieties with BRRI Dhan46 vis-a-vis the adoption of prescribed agronomic practices in Boro-Fallow-Late planted T. Aman cropping pattern involving the social elites would enhance the adoption of technology.
