Nutritional composition and quality of some feed samples were evaluated as part of the quality management system of Golda (Macrobrachium rosenbergii, de Man) farms at Fulpur, Mymensingh. Significant variation in nutrient composition was found among the feeds obtained from various sources (farms and feed industries). The moisture content of the feeds ranged from 14.14 to 21.22%, the lowest value found in Niribili fishmeal and the highest value in BFDC fishmeal. The crude protein content was in the range of 25.68 to 51.36%, the highest value in Niribili fishmeal and the lowest value in Modina starter feed. Lipid content was in the range of 5.44 to 15.92%; the highest value was found in BFDC fishmeal which is much above the normal range. The highest ash content was also in the BFDC fishmeal. For better comparison nutrient composition of the feeds were calculated on dry weight basis. The TVBN value, peroxide value and APC of feed samples were also investigated for the quality assessment of feed. The TVBN values ranged from 23.38 to 24.5 mg/100 g sample. The peroxide values varied from 18.26 to 27.23 m eq./ kg oil, largest value in Modina starter feed and lowest value in CP-9043. The APC varied from 4.58 X 104 to 8.13 X 104 CFU/ g where the highest value was obtained in Modina feed and the lowest value in CP- 9041. In qualitative study, some feed sample showed coliform contamination but presence of Salmonella was not detected in any. The overall results revealed that feed composition and quality of most of the fish feed! ingredients used in Golda farms were in acceptable condition.

To know the nutritive value of some commercial feeds used in Golda and fish farms and to assess the quality of the feed with regard to their chemical parameters and microbiological standard in view of their implication in public health and trade.

Different grades of commercially available prawn and fish feed samples manufactured by four feed companies such as Charoen Pokphand-Bangladesh (CP), Modina Fish Feed Ltd., Niribili Fish & Poultry Feed Ltd. and Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) were used in this investigation. The samples were collected from different prawn farms at Fulpur, Mymensingh and from manufacturers (BFDC and Niribili). Samples were packed tightly in separate polyethylene bags on the basis of the grade and manufacturer and then brought to the laboratory for analysis. For analysis, feed samples were comminuted in a porcelain mortar and ground in a blender to produce a homogeneous mass before being used for analysis. Each sample was kept in a separate airtight container during study period and used both for nutritional composition and bacteriological study. Major nutritional constituents of the feed (moisture, crude protein, lipid and ash) were carried out  with certain modifications. Total Volatile Base Nitrogen (TVBN) was determined.  Peroxide value was determined. All the estimates were carried out in triplicate and the means are reported. Different types of colonies which grew on surface of different selective media were identified by study of morphological and biochemical characteristics. It was done according to the method suggested in Cowan and Steels Manual for the Identification of Medical Bacteria and Flow Chart for the Presumptive Identification of Selected Bacteria from Fishes.

Significant variation in nutrient composition was found among the feeds obtained from various sources. The moisture content of the feeds ranged from 14.14 to 21.22% with the lowest value found in fishmeal collected from Niribili Fish & Poultry Feed Ltd. and the highest value found in fishmeal obtained from BFDC. The crude protein content was in the range of 25.68 to 51.36% with highest value observed in Niribili fish meal and lowest value in grower feed collected from Modina Fish Feed Ltd. Lipid content was in the range of 5.44 to 15.92%, the highest value was in BFDC fishmeal and the lowest value was in Niribili fishmeal. Weight gains in prawns were affected by lipid sources and fatty acids in the feeds. The ash content was in the range of 11.78 to 35.15%, the highest ash content was in the feeds obtained from BFDC and the lowest ash content was in CP grower feed (feed code 9043). There is a possibility of oxidation in feeds with high lipid' contents particularly if the feeds are stored for a long time. The high ash content of the feeds probably was associated with high bone contents and contamination with sands and filth. Unhygienic production system, use of poor quality, contaminated raw materials, lack of personal hygiene, improper packaging and storage contribute high load of microbes in commercially manufactured feeds to a great extent. In qualitative study, some feed samples showed coliform contamination but presence of Salmonella was not detected. There is an obvious relationship between the moisture content and bacterial load in food products. Though the heat applied during drying of raw materials cause considerable reduction of microorganisms but spores of some bacteria and molds usually survive. Bacteria, yeasts and molds do not grow with moisture content below 18%, 20% and 16% respectively. The overall results obtained for starter, grower, ·nursery feeds and fishmeal from various sources reveal that food quality of most of the fish feed/ ingredients used for feeding the Golda were in acceptable condition
