Performance of Promising Rice Hybrids in Northern-west Part of Bangladesh Under Irrigated Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Some elected elite rice hybrids were evaluated at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Regional Station, Rajshahi, Bangladesh during December 1998 to May 1999 for selecting best hybrids. Among tested hybrids, IR68877H, CNHR3, IR64616H, IR67693H and IR71092H gave 20-31% higher grain yield compared to check variety BRRI dhan28 having similar or less growth duration in trial-1. Hybrid IR69690H was superior to check variety BRRI dhan 29 by 8% in terms of grain yields with 3 days less growth duration in trial-2. Although 1000- grain weight, panicles m^-2, and spikelet fertility contributed to higher grain yields in hybrid rice, 1000-grain weight played the major role for improvement of yield. The hybrids IR69977H, CNHR3, IR64616H, IR67693H, and IR71092H could be suitable replacement of BRRI dhan28 and the hybrid IR69690H of BRRI dhan 29 provided farmers' an easy access to seeds.

Objectives:

To select elite rice hybrids having high yield potentials and adaptability in irrigated rice ecosystem of Northern-West part of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Some selected promising elite rice hybrids were tested in two trials at the field of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Regional Station, Rajshahi during dry season (December 1998 to May 1999). Ten hybrids viz. IR68877H (IR58025N IR21567-18-3R), IR64615H (IR58025A/ IR29723-143-3-2-1R), IR68879H (IR58025N IR32809-26-3-3R), IR68284H (IR58025A/ IR34686-179-1-2-1R), IR65488H (IR58025N IR54742-22-19-34R), CNHR3 (IR62829A/AjayaR), IR64616H (IA62829N IR29723-143-3-2-1R), IR67693H (IR62829N IR46R), IR69697H (PMS8N IR46R) andiR71092H (IR58025N IR55838-B2-2-3-2-3R), and four standard checks as IR72, PSBRc2, BAAl dhand28 and BRRI dhan28 were used in trial-1. The trial was laid out in RCBD with three replications. The plot size was 5m x 4m. Four hybrids viz. IR69690H (IR58025N BR827R), IR68877H (IR58025N IR21567R), IR67161H (IR62829N IR44675R) and Aalok 6201 (IR58025N IR10198R), and two standard checks as BAAl dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 were evaluated in trial-2. The trial was non replicated bigger plot (1OOsq.m). Three samples were collected from each plot for yield and yield contributing characters. The samples size of 10 square meters was used as a replication during data analysis in RCB design.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found from this study that IR68877H, CNHR3, IR64616H, IR67693, and IR71092H hybrids could be suitable replacement of BRRI dhan28 and IR69690H hybrid of BRRI dhan29 provided farmers' an easy access to seeds every year with reasonable price.
