A total of 54 locations (Farmers' fields) in different upazillas under Rangpur, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Nilphamari, Bogra and Joypurhat districts were surveyed to estimate the loss of potato tuber due to cutworm. From the survey report it was evident that cutworm infestation was common in potato growing areas. On an average more than 13.53o/o tubers (by weight) became infested by the cutworm. Among the upazillas surveyed percentage of tuber damage was high in Shibganj upazilla under Bogra district and low in Birganj upazilla under Dinajpur district. One field experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of eight chemical insecticides, two botanical insecticides and one cultural practice against the cutworm in the potato field during the Rabi season of 1999-2000 at Debiganj under district Panchagarh. The experiment was laid out in a Randomised Complete Block Design with three replications. Each treatment plot of 3.0 m x 3.0 m was planted with 5 rows of potato tubers at 60 em between rows and 25 em between tubers. Treatments were applied once after 45 days of planting except for mechanical control, which was practiced at 7 days intervals after 45 days of planting and continued up to harvesting. All the insecticides showed significantly (P>0.05) lower tuber damage by number (0.68% to 3.50%) and by weight (0.94% to 4.24%) as compared with 39 the untreated control ( 14.27o/o and 15.30% damages of tubers by number and weight).

i) To assess the losses caused due to the cutworm from different locations under farmers' field conditions

ii) To study the performance of some chemical and botanical insecticides in reducing the cutworm damage in the potato field,

iii) To study the effects of agronomic practice on the rates of cutworm infestation.

To assess the loss of potato due to cutworm, three upazillas from each of Panchagarh, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Bogra districts and two upazillas from each of Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Joypurhat districts were selected. In each upazilla three locations (Farmers' fields) were randomly selected. Actual loss assessment was made on three unit samples selected at random from each location. From each unit sample (50 kilograms) numbers of damaged and healthy tubers were counted. The weights of damaged and healthy tubers were also taken. These results were finally expressed as percentage. Data were collected at harvesting period of potato. The experiment was conducted at the farmer's field of Debiganj under Panchagarh district during the rabi season, 1999-2000. The total rainfall at this location during the crop season (November-March) was zero . The maximum air temperature varied from 24°C to 32.8°C while the minimum temperature varied from I 0.5°C to 19.0°C. The soil of the experimental plot was sandy in texture, low in fertility status with a pH level 5.5. The required quantity of potato seed of variety cardinal was collected from Breeders Seed Production Centre, Debiganj, Panchagarh for the field experiment. Two botanical and eight chemical insecticides were tested for their efficacy against the cutworm. Hence, there were twelve treatments in total including a mechanical and untreated control.

The percent damaged tuber in Debiganj upazilla by number was 10.16%, 11.13% and 9.54% in location- I, location-2 and locatoin-3, respectively (Table 3). In this upazilla an average of 10.27% tuber infestation was recorded. In Panchagarh Sadar the highest tuber infestation (12.1 5%) was observed m location-I and on the average 8.93% tubers were infested in this upazilla. In Boda upazilla 8.16%, 9.63% and 11.73o/o tubers were damaged m location- I, location-2 and location-3, respectively. An average of 9.84% tubers was damaged. The percentages of damaged tuber by weight in three locations of Debiganj were nearly the same. It was 10.35%, 10.73% and 10.40% in location- 1, location-2 and location-3, respectively. Average infestation was 10.49%. The highest infestation was observed in Panchagarh Sadar upazilla, location-I. It was 11.64% by weight. The lowest infestation was 7.04% in location-3 of this upazilla. Average 9.290/o infestation by weight was recorded.
