Disease Investigation in Walking Catfish, Clarias Batrachus Through Histopathological Technique

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Histopathological study was done with walking catfish, Clarias batrachus to diagnose diseases for a period of eight months. Two treatments were considered and three fishes were randomly elected from each treatment. Treatment-} included the fish of Kailla beel of Mymensingh and Treatment-I included the fish of Mohangonj, Netrakona. Fortnightly samplings were done and skin, muscle, gill, liver, kidney and stomach were collected from the experimental fishes to carry out histopathological studies of the respective organs. In July, August and September most of the catfish of both of the treatments were clinically and histologically normal and healthy. Parasitic infestations were at minimum level during this period. However, in November, December and January clinically deep red necrosis, loss of skin and hemorrhagic lesions were observed which turned into ulcer at dissolvent and caudal regions of the fish sampled from the both treatments. Histologically, loss of skin epidermis, ruptured dermis and muscles and necrosis with vacuolation were observed in the affected fishes of treatment-!. In the fishes of treatment, loss of epidermal and dermal layer of skin and necrotic myotomes of muscles with fungal granular were observed

Methodology:

The experiment was designed into two treatments. Treatment- includes the fish of Kailla beel, Mymensingh and treatment-11 includes the fish of Mohangong. Netrakona. Three live fishes were randomly collected from both treatments twice in a month. The fish were then carried to Fish Disease Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, by plastic buckets filled with water. The average length of fish ranged from 18 to 23.6 em and the average weight ranged from 51.66 to 118.3 em. Clinical observation Immediately after collection. fishes were examined externally to record any injury, lesion and other abnormalities. 3.3.Collection and identification of parasite Fishes were examined carefully for the presence of any external parasite on slime and gill of the fish. Small amount of slime was taken on to a glass slide.

Achievement/Findings:

Catfish of treatment-Il were almost normal and rough skin was observed in the month July and August . In September mild lesion were observed in the caudal region. However, in October, loss of skin with mild hemorrhagic lesions were recorded in dissolvent and caudal region. In November, infections and injury such as loss of skin, necrotic lesion were increased in caudal and dorsal regions fl I f. During December and January, dark red necrosis were observed in the same regions, which extended in both size and depth. However, in February, injury in caudal fish did not recovery fully and hemorrhagic lesion was still observed.
