Effect of Mulches on the Growth and Yield of Some Garlic Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out to study the effect of mulches on the growth and yield of some garlic germplasms at the Horticulture Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymcnsingh during the period from November. 1999 to March, 2000. There were different mulches such as water hyacinth, white polythene, black polythene, rice straw and control. Among 10 germplasms there were 7 local germplasms and 3 were exotic. Local germplasms were G 1, G2, 03, G4, G5, G7 and G19. Exotic Germplasms were G12. G2o and G21• The two factors experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were recorded on yield and some selected plant characters and statistically analyzed for evaluation of the eflect of different treatments and treatment combinations. Result showed that plant height was significantly influenced by mulches and germplasms at different days after planting. The highest plant height was observed from straw mulch and G , 9 germ plasm, while combined effect of G2 germ plasm with straw mulch obtained significantly highest plant height.

Objectives:

a) To observe the effectiveness of mulching materials on growth and yield of garlic

b) To find out appropriate mulching materials and Germplasms for better growth and yield of garlic.

Methodology:

The present piece of research work was carried out to study the responses of different germplasms of garlic on the growth and yield planted with different mulching materials. The experiment was conducted at the Horticultural Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November, 1999 to March, 2000. 3.2 Climate The experimental area was under the sub-tropical climate which is characterized by heavy rainfall, high humidity, high temperature and relatively long day during the kharif season (April to September) and hardly any rainfall, low humidity, low temperature and short day during the rabi season (October to March). Details of the metrological data in respect of temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, sunshine and soil temperature, for the entire period of investigation is shown in Appendix ISoil The soil of the experimental plots was silty loam belonging to the Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain under Agro-Ecological Zone 9 (AEZ), which is originated from old Brahmaputra deposits, having non- calcareous dark grey flood plain soil (FAO, 1988). The selected field was a medium high land. Soil characteristics of the experimental site at a depth of 0-30 em were analyzed at the Hurnholdt Soil Testing Laboratory. Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mynensingh. The pH of the soil sample was 5.94 and the amount of organic carbon, total N, available P and K.

Achievement/Findings:

Plant height was recorded at different days after planting (DAP). It was observed that effect of mulch was highly significant in this respect (Appendix V). At 75 DAP, the highest plant height (46.28 em) was obtained from straw mulch while water hyacinth and black polythene mulch showed 43.87 em and 41.72 em. respectively (Fig. I). Water hyacinth and black polythene were statistically different with straw mulch, but water hyacinth showed statistically identical reading with black polythene. the lowest plant height (38.18 em) was obtained from white polythene mulch. Heights of plant from all mulches increased up to 75 DAP. Water hyacinth mulch exhibited the maximum plant height at later stage of growth. Similar result was reported in garlic that straw mulch produced the maximum plant height. Mulches showed significantly increased plant height . Plant height was found comparatively higher with straw mulch, this might be due to plant received more moisture from different mulched plots at different depth, which produced the maximum vegetative growth resulting in highest plant height
