Effects of Different Propagating Materials and Date of Planting on the Yield and Quality of Sesbania Rostrata Seed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to December 2000 to evaluate the effect of different plant potions as planting materials and dates of planting on the crop characters, yield and quality of Sesbania rostrata seed. The treatments consisted of three plant . portions viz., top portion, middle portion and bottom portion and four dates of planting viz., 20 July, 30 July, 9 August and 19 August 2000. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. Results showed that plant height, number of branches plant^-1, number of pods plant^-1, length of pod, number of seeds pod^-1, 1000-seed weight, seed and stover yields and seed quality were highest in crop raised from the top portion. Plant height, number of branches plant^-1, number of pods plant-1, length of pod, seed yield and seed quality in terms of germination percentage were highest with the earliest date (20 July 2000) of planting. Top portion coupled with 20 July planting appeared to be the best option to produce the highest quality seed.

Objectives:

To see the effect of different propagating materials and dates of planting of Sesbania rostrata and dates of planting on the yield and quality of seed.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to December 2000. The treatments included in the study were (a) three plant portions of Sesbania rostrata viz., top, middle and bottom portion and (b) four dates of planting viz., 20 July, 30 July, 9 August and 19 August, 2000. the experiment was laid out in a split plot design with four replications allocating the different plant portions on the main field and different dates of planting on sub-plots. Cuttings were planted in the field on 20 July, 30 July, 9 August and 19 August 2000 at an angle of about 40 to 50°. The cuttings were planted at a row to row spacing of 25 em and plant to plant spacing of 25 cm. Gap filling was done on the 10th day after each planting. The crop was assessed to attain maturity when 80% of the pods turned chocolate brown to black colour. At maturity, the experimental crops were harvested plot-wise. The first harvest was on 2 November 2000. Prior to harvesting, five plants were selected randomly and uprooted from each plot and were bundled separately, tagged and brought to a clean threshing floor. The crop bundles were sun dried for four days by spreading them on the threshing floor. Pods were separated from the plants by hands. Seeds were separated from the pods by beating with bamboo sticks. The collected seeds were dried in the sun to attain 10% moisture content. The dried seeds and stover and plants were cleaned and weighed plot wise. Data were recorded on plant height, number of branches plant-1 , length of pod, number of seeds pod^-1, weight of 1000-seed yield and stover yield. All the collected data were analyzed statistically and adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on the results of present study in may be concluded that top portion of Sesbania rostrata coupled with 20 July planting may be practiced for higher yield and quality seed production.
