Influence of age of seedling and spacing on the performance of BRRI dhan32 under the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) was studied in a field experiment conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to December 2004. The treatments included in the experiment consisted of four levels of age of seedling viz., sprouted seeds planting, 9, 12 and 30-day-old seedlings and three spacing viz., 25 cm x 25 cm, 35 cm x 35 em and 45 cm x 45 cm. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Studied yield parameters were significantly influenced by the experimental treatments and their interaction. The use of 9-day old seedlings produced the highest grain (5.27 t ha- 1), straw (7.08 t ha-1) and biological (12.17 t ha-1) yields. The highest grain (5.61 t ha-1), straw (7.68 t ha-1) and biological (13.53 t ha-1) yields were found from the widest spacing of 45 cm x 45 cm. The interaction of 9-day-old seedlings x 45 cm x 45 cm spacing produced the highest grain (6.86 t ha-1), straw (8.42 t ha-1') and biological (15.28 t ha-1) yields. From the study it may be concluded that 9-day-old seedling at 45 cm x 45 cm spacing showed better performance in respect of growth, yield and yield components under SRI technique.

To find out suitable age of seedlings and optimum spacing and their interaction effect for higher yield of transplant aman rice under the System of Rice Intensification.

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agriculturel University, Mymensingh during July to December 2004. Soil of the experiment field was more or less neutral in reaction, low in organic matter content and its general fertility level was also low. Two factors namely- four ages of seedling (i) Sprouted seeds planting (ii) 9-day-old (iii) 12-day-old and (iv) 30-day-old seedling and three plant spacing (i) 25 cm x 25 cm (ii) 35 cm x 35 cm and (iii) 45 cm x 45 cm were included in the study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of unit plot was 4.0 m x 2.5 m. Rice variety BRRI dhan32 was used as planting material. The sprouted seeds were sown in the nursery beds on 1, 19 and 22 July 2004. Seedlings were properly taken care of. Five hills (excluding border hills) were selected randomly from each unit plot and uprooted before harvesting for recording necessary data. After sampling the whole plot was harvested at maturity. The crop was harvested on 1 December 2004. The grains were cleaned and sun dried to moisture content of 14%. Straw was also dried properly. Finally grain and straw yields plot-1 were recorded and converted to ton ha-1 . Data on yield and yield contributing characters like plant height, number of total tillers hill-1 , number of effective tillers hill- 1 , number of non effective tillers hill-1 , panicle length, grains panicle-1 sterile spikelets panicle-1 , 1000-grain weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index were recorded. The recorded and calculated data were analyzed statistically and mean differences were adjudged by Duncans Multiple Range Test

Yield contributing characters like effective tillers hill-1 , length of panicle, number of grains panicle-1 and 1000-grain weight were recorded highest in 9-day-old seedlings. The probable cause of production of maximum number of effective tillers hill-1 might be due to younger seedling which had the ability to produce more number of tillers because of higher photosynthetic rate in younger seedlings. The interaction of age of seedling and spacing had significant effect on crop characters except plant height, 1000-grain weight and straw yield. The treatment combination of 9-day-old seedling x 45 cm x 45 cm spacing produced the highest number of total tillers hill-1 (38.96), maximum number of effective tillers hill-1 (35.40), longest panicle (26.15 cm), highest number of gr.ains panicle-1 (180.33), grain yield (6.09 t ha-1) and biological yield (13.91 t ha-1) while 12-day-old seedling x 45 cm x 45 cm spacing produced the second highest yield of BRRI dhan32. The highest grain yield was might be due to cumulative effect of highest number of effective tillers hill-1 , longest panicle, highest number of grains panicle-1 and heaviest grain weight which was recorded from 9-day-old seedlings x 45 cm x 45 cm spacing. The lowest grain yield (3.21 t ha-1) was obtained from 30-day-old seedlings x 25 cm x 25 cm spacing.
