Study on the Mineralogy of the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the mineralogy of selected soils of important series of the AEZ Old Brahmapulra Floodplain was carried out in the Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Eighteen soil samples were collected initially representing six soil series: five of Sonatathree each of Ghatail SilmondLokdeo and Tarakanda, and one of Sherpur series. Particle size distributions of soils determined by both ISSS and USDA systems ranged from 27 to 58o sand 23 to 44% silt and 12 to 33% clay, and from 24 to 59% sand. 31 to 56°i silt and 10 to 33o clay, respectively. As determined by USDA systeout of 18 soil samples. 9 were identified as loam, 7 as silt loom as sandy loam and the rest as clay loam indicating silt dominant textural classes. The 2 clay fractions was as determined by ISSS system showed a general tendency of increasing with the decreasing position of the soil senes on the ridges of a Catena. Out of 18 samples, 12 samples were selected for mineralogical analysis of silt (2-20 ) and clay fractions.

Objectives:

1 . To find out the mineralogical composition of the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain soils.

2. To identify the inherent potentiality of the soils of this AEZ, and

3. To verify the proposed minemlogical suite for this AEZ.

Methodology:

The soils used in the present study were previously collected by Dr Jahiruddin, Professor, Department of Soli Science, BAU, Mymeningh for a BARC funded project. The samples were collected with the help of an auger at 0-15 em depth from eighteen different locations of the four Upazila of the district of Mymensingh (representing the Old Brahmaputra Floodplains AEZ). The sampling locations of the soils with their General Soil Types. USDA Soil Family as well as their associated soil series . Some selected physical and chemical properties of the soils are also shown . The soils samples represented six different soil series; five of Sonatalathree each of Ghatail, Silmondi, Lokdeo, and Tarakanda and one of Sherpur series. Achievement/Findings:

Out of 18 samples, 12 samples were selected for mineralogical analysis of silt (2-20 ) and clay fractions. In silt fraction, five minerals were identified: quartz, mica, chlorite, K-feldspar and plagioclase in ranges of 47 to 62%, 9 to 21%., 8 to 13 to 12°/b and 8 to 11%, respectively. rvfica was found to be most predominant mineral in the clay fraction (21-48 o). Other minerals found in all samples were chlorite, kaolinite, quartz and feldspars ranged from 13-267-12 0., 16-33% and 6-13 0, respectively. Either vermiculite or vermiculite-chlorite inter grade were identified in soils while interspecific mica-chlorite was present in half of the samples studied with a range of 1-93-190A> and 2-3% or nil, respectively. However. the presence of mica and chlorite as the major minerals along with considerable amount ot vermiculite and/or vermiculite-chlorite inter grade minerals, supports the proposed mineralogical suite of this AEZ . The inherent potentiality of the soils of this AEZ was termed as 'moderate, due to the presence of moderate amount of clay and mica, and absence or less amounts of smectite and vermiculite.
