Resource Exploitation for Irrigated Boro Rice Cultivation Under Favourable Production Environments

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Using Cobb-Douglas production function this paper estimates the efficiency of MV Boro rice farms of Fatehpur under shandpur district, Bangladesh. Returns to scales were estimated separately for small, medium and large farm categories and the level of allocative efficiency of all these farms were measured. Empirical results showed that most of the rice farms under study are predominantly inefficient in allocating their resources. More efficient application of chemical fertilizers and land preparation for irrigated HYV rice would enable farms to achieve productivity under similar production environments.

(a) To determine the input use level and productivity of MV Boro in different farm sizes; (b) to examine the resource productivity and efficiency as a basis of indicating the potential for expanding the use of resources to achieve higher output level and (c) to derive policy implication from the above

Methodology:

The study was confined to two villages namely Luthua and Thadalia under Fatepur union of Matlab thana in Chandpur district. In all 120 sample farms (taking 60 households from each village) were randomly selected. In selecting the households, special attention was given to obtain representation of the farm size category. Primary data were collected from all the sample farms using a pre-designed questionnaire prepared in consistence with the objectives of the study. Data were collected during the Boro season, 1999.Descriptive statistics was used to determine the profitability of irrigated Boro rice production in the area. On the other hand, descriptive and statistical techniques were used for the efficiency analysis

Achievement/Findings:

It appears from the analysis that the average size of farm holding for the small farmers is 0.67 hectare. Almost 59 percent of the cropped land in the study areas are owned and operated by the large farm households. The lowest segment (15%) of the total operated holdings are owned by the small and marginal farm households. It is evident that the highest gross return (Tk. 31562.40/ha) from MV Boro production was obtained by the farms under medium size group and the lowest gross return (Tk. 27288.90/ha) was obtained by the small farm house holds.Further it was evident that MV Boro cultivation is absolutely profitable under the consideration of both full cost and cash cost basis as indicated by the corresponding BCR values. The benefit cost ratio on full cost basis for MV Boro cultivation was found to be 1.68,1.80 and 1.61 for small, medium and large farms, respectively. Marginal factor costs (MFC) of different inputs that are used in Bora rice production in the study area. It appears from the data that the farmers in the area are inefficiently allocating their farm resources. The marginal value product (MVP) of the inputs are generally higher than the corresponding marginal factor costs indicating that these inputs are underutilized and that they should be used more effectively to achieve greater output .
