An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from July to December 2003 to study the effect of row spacing and nitrogen level on the performance of hybrid rice, Sonarbangla 1. Three row spacing viz., 20, 30 and 40 em and five nitrogen levels viz., 46, 69, 92, 115 and 138 kg N ha-1 were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications assigning row spacing in the main plot and nitrogen levels in the sub-plot. The results showed that plant height, number of bearing tillers hill-1 and grains panicle-1 increased with the increase in row spacing and number of non-bearing tillers hill-1, number of sterile spikelets panicle-1. straw yield decreased with the increase in row spacing. The highest grain yield (4.15 t ha-1) was found in 30 em row spacing. Number of bearing tillers hill-1, number of grains panicle-1, grain yield were the highest at 92 kg N ha-1 which was identical with those of 115 kg N ha-1. The plant height, numbers of non-bearing tillers hill-1, straw yield were found to be highest at 138 kg N ha-1.

To find out the effect of row spacing,  optimum level of nitrogen, and the interaction of row spacing and nitrogen level on the growth and yield of hybrid rice, Sonarbangla 1.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experiment site belongs to Old Brahmaputra floodplain (AEZ-9). The pH of the soil ranged from 6.6 to 7.0. The experiment included two factors viz., (i) row spacing (20, 30 and 40 em) and (ii) nitrogen level (46, 69, 92, 115 and 138 kg N ha.1) (equivalent to 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 kg urea ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replications assigning row spacing in the main plot and nitrogen level in the unit-plot. The total number of unit plot was 60 and size of the unit plot was 3.0m x 2.5m. The land was fertilized with Triple super phosphate, Muriate of potash, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate at the rates of 80, 70, 110 and 15 kg ha-1 , respectively as basal dose prior to transplanting. Urea was applied at five different levels as 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 kg ha- 1 of which one-third as basal and two thirds as topdressing in two equal splits at 20 and 50 days of transplanting. Twenty one day old seedlings were transplanted in the plots on 7 August 2003 maintaining row spacing at 20, 30 and 40 cm with constant 15 cm hill spacing with 3 seedlings hill-1. All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crops were harvested on 13 November 2003 at full maturity. Data were recorded from ten randomly selected hills from each unit plot. The grain and straw yields were recorded for the whole plot. The collected data were analyzed statistically and mean differences of treatments were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Grain and straw yields were affected significantly by the interaction. However, no consistent trend could be traced thereof. The maximum number of total tillers hill-1 (12.9) was produced by the treatment combination of 40 cm spacing with 92 kg N ha-1 and the lowest (9.96) from 20 cm spacing with 92 kg N ha-1. The highest number of bearing tillers hill-1 (9.6) was produced by the treatment combination of 40 cm spacing and 92 kg N ha-1 and the lowest (5.25) from 20 cm spacing and 138 kg N ha-1. When grain yield was concerned, the best treatment combination (4.63 t ha-1) was 30 cm spacing and 92 kg N ha-1 which was identical (4.6 t ha-1 to that of 30 em and 115 kg N ha-1. The lowest grain yield (3.1 t ha-1 was found from the treatment combination of 40 cm spacing and 138 kg N ha-1 .The highest straw yield (7.36 t ha-1 reported from the treatment combination of 20 cm and 138 kg N ha-1 and the lowest (4.62 t ha-1) from 40 cm spacing in combination with 115 kg N ha-1.
