Study on Flowering Pattern of 15 Groundnut Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Flowering patterns were studied in 15 genotypes of groundnut. In all the genotypes, production of flowers occurred in flushes. Daily flowering pattern followed unimodal, bimodal and trimodal peaks, with unimodal being the case in most genotypes. The unimodal group represented by 9276, 4595, ICGV-88388, ICGV86707, M-5, 65/1484, Ace-12, DM-1 , ICGS-E-55 and ICGS-76 showed only one flush of flower production and produced maximum number of flowers within this flush. The bimodal group represented by 3203 and DK-1 gave two flushes of flower production and produced more number of flowers during second flush. In case of trimodal group (DG-2, ICGE-55 and ICGV-89259), there were three flushes. Among three flushes, the first flush of flower production occurred earlier than that of all other groups and the third flush produced more number of flowers than other two flushes. Irrespective of flowering patterns more number of flowers were produced up to 115 days after emergence. The genotype 4595 produced the highest number of flowers (63.97) per plant up to 129 days after emergence. Percentage of pods from flowers was ranged from 21.7 to 71.5. The genotype DM- I showed highest pod setting percentage.

Objectives:

. To understand the flowering patterns and relationship between number of flowers and pods which helps in choosing of parents for breeding programmes

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during Rabi season of 2000-2001. 15 genotypes were sown in Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 1.2m X 5m with the spacing of 30cm between rows and 15 em between plants of the same row. Data on daily flowers per plant and number of pods per plant were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot. Flowers were counted every day from the date of commencement of flowering and continued up to 129 days after emergence. Flowers produced after this period would have no chance of developing in to pods. Then, the data were expressed on plant basis for total number of flowers at an interval of 7 days and pod setting percentage.

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that the genotype 4595 produced highest number of flowers per plant and the genotypes OM-I and 3203 produced high percentage of pods. Therefore, based on flowering pattern and pod setting percentage of the genotypes, it is inferred that the genotypes 4595, DM-1 and 3203 can be utilized in further breeding programme.
