Performance of 11 elite mutants and two varieties of summer tomato were studied at the research farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) and farmers field, Rangpur during the summer seasons of 2001 and 2002, respectively. Results revealed that yield performance of summer tomato mostly depended on weather conditions, specially on rainfall and temperature. The mutants, STM-110, STM-102 and STM-101 harvested earlier, showed longer crop duration, better storage quality and also showed the highest and higher yields of 24.92, 23.84 and 23.00 tons per hectare, respectively. The yield was higher due to the higher number of fruits per plant. These three mutants also showed tolerant to yellow leaf curl virus and . bacterial wilt. The mutants, STM-110, STM-102 and STM-101 may be released as improved varieties at the northern region of Bangladesh after few more trials at on farm levels.

To select the most suitable mutant tomato, therefore, this experiment was undertaken to evaluate the eleven newly developed mutants at the northern region of Bangladesh especially in the Rangpur district.

Two experiments were conducted at the sub-station farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture and farmers field Rangpur during the summer seasons of 2001 and 2002, respectively. Eleven elite mutants of summer tomato developed at Plant Breeding Division of BINA was evaluated in this study. The experiments were designed in Randomized Complete Block with 3 replications at both the locations. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2.5 m with the spacing 50 cm x 50 cm. The seeds were sown in the seedbed on February 26 and March 2 in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Thirty six and 31-day-old seedlings were transplanted in the experimental field and farmers field, respectively. During the experimental period the maximum and minimum temperature, rainfall and humidity at Rangpur were 32.6° and 13.6°C, 480 mm and 01 mm, 80% and 56% in 2001, respectively and 31° and 14.2°C, 913.2 mm and 6.16 mm, 90% and 68% in 2002, respectively. Manure and fertilizers were applied as per recommendation of BARC . Irrigation, weeding, pruning, stalking and other intercultural operations were done as and when required. The pesticides, Melathion 57 EC and ridomil MZ were regularly sprayed at 10-15 days interval from 15 days after transplanting up to 7 days before first harvest due to protect mosaic virus and leaf blight. Ten plants were selected on the basis of vigority from each plant for data recording on horticultural and yield contributing characters. Yield data were collected from each whole plot and converted into ton per hectare. Harvesting was done at different dates depending upon fruit ripening. Collected data were statistically analyzed  and means were separated by DMRT for interpretation of the results.

Significant variation was observed in yield and yield components. The mutant STM- 110 produced the highest number of fruit per plant, which was identical to STM-102 (37.2). The highest single fruit weight was produced by Binatomato-3 (61.3 g) followed by STM-109 (50.8 g). The results revealed that plants having larger fruit size, produced lower number of fruit per plant while plants with smaller fruit size produced higher number of fruit per plant. As a result, plants with smaller fruit produced higher yield. The maximum fruit yield per plant was observed in STM-110 (950 g), which was identical to STM-2 (942 g), STM-102 (892 g), STM- 101 (844 g) and STM-105 (834 g). The lowest fruit yield per plant was observed in STM-52 (310 g), which was identical to STM-109 (323 g) because of lower fruit setting per plant. Many workers studied with different varieties and observed that variation in the performance of different varieties were due to individual characteristics. Yield and yield components showed inferior performances in the second year (2002) to the first year (2001) due to heavy rainfall and high humidity and also poor management practices (Farmers management). The results of the present study revealed that the mutants STM-110, STM-102 and STM-101 performed better in respect of early fruiting vis-a-vis early maturity, longer duration of harvesting time, less plant damage by pests, higher storage quality and higher yield. The above three mutants may be advocated as improve varieties for commercial cultivation at the northern region of Bangladesh after few more trials at farmers' level.
