Effect of Application of Phosphorus, Zinc and Molybdenum on Yield and Nutritional Quality of Grasspea (lathyrus Sativus L.) Seed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot culture experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of phosphorus, zinc and molybdenum and their interactions on yield and nutritional quality of grasspea (cv. Binakheshari 1). Results showed that phosphorus, zinc and molybdenum singly at their intermediate levels rather than higher levels performed the best in terms of yield and nutritional parameters. Among the two factor interactions P₂Zn₁ in most cases showed the generous performance on the above parameters while in case of three factor interactions, P₂Zn₁Mo₁ performed the best.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of P, Zn and Mo on nutrient uptake and yield of grasspea and to recommend the suitable combination of P, Zn and Mo for the highest nutrient and yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Department of Biochemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh using the soil collected from Old Brahamaputra Floodplain agro-ecological zone ('Sonatola' series). The experiment was set during Rabi Season from 17 November 2003 to 20 March 2004. The soil was silt loam with pH 6.5, organic matter 2.05 %, total N 0.15%, available P 10.78 ppm, exchangeable K 0.27me%, exchangeable Mg 3.20 me%, CEC 19.39 me% and C: N ratio 7.76. It was a three-factor experiment where phosphorus, zinc and molybdenum were applied at three different doses like P (0 kg P ha^-1 Zn (0 kg Zn ha-1 Mo (0 kg Mo ha^-1) , P, (10 kg P ha^-1, Zn, (1 kg Zn ha^-1 Mo, (1 kg Mo ha^-1) P 2 (20 kg P ha^-1), Zn₂ (2 kg Zn ha^-1) and Mo₂ (2 kg Mo ha^-1 ). The experiment was laid out in split-split plot design with four replications. Different nutritional parameters like calcium (%), magnesium (%), and zinc (%) were determined following the method discussed in Page et at. (1962), phosphorus (%) by Olsen's method discussed in Jackson (1967), sulphur (%) by the method of Black (1965), sodium (mg %) and potassium(%) by the method of Golterman (1971) and different yield parameters like pods (Nos./plant), hay (gm/pot) and grain yield (gm/pot) were determined. The fertilizers were applied at the time of final soil preparation for the pots. The pots were kept under intensive care and every intercultural operation was done when necessary. The test crop was grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) and the variety used was Binakhesari-1, a low neurotoxin cultivar developed through irradiation.

Achievement/Findings:

It is evident that treatment containing intermediate dose (P₁, Zn₁ and Mo₁) in both two (P₂Zn₁) and three (P₂Zn₁Mo₁) factor interactions is superior to the treatment containing highest dose of individual elements as well as their combination. So, it may be concluded that to get highest yield and nutrient from grasspea intermediate dose with separate and combined application should be chosen to get good results and also to save excess cost due to unlimited use of fertilizers and to keep soil and its environment healthy.
