Impact of Meghna-dhonagoda Irrigation Project on the Changes in Crop Cultivation and Related Activities

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The focus of this study was to determine the impact of Meghna Dhonagoda Irrigation Project (MDIP) on the measured by changes in crop cultivation and related activities of the beneficiaries after implementation of MDIP.The study was conducted in MDIP area of Matlab North Upazila under Chandpur district. Out of 308, one hundred and eight beneficiaries were randomly selected which constituted the sample. Data were collected during 10 February to 20 March 2004 using interview schedule. The findings reveal that the use of selected modern agricultural technologies as well as overall use of modern agricultural technologies by the beneficiaries increased significantly. The findings revealed that the overall socio-economic conditions of the beneficiaries considerably improved due to the interventions of the MDIP.

Objectives:

To determine the impact of Meghna Dhonagoda Irrigation Project (MDIP) on the measured by changes in crop cultivation and related activities of the beneficiaries after implementation of MDIP.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the MDIP area of Matlab Uttar (North) upazila. This comprises the gross area of 17,584 hectares of land in the fourteen unions of Matlab Uttar (North) upazila and bounded on the north and the west by the mighty Meghna and on the east and the south by the Dhonagoda river. Data for this study were collected from a sample rather than the whole population. In this connection, multistage random sampling method was followed in order to select the sample. Six out of 14 unions were randomly selected for this study. The population were head of the households of either male or female. A list of 308 beneficiaries were collected from BWDB, Chandpur office who constituted the population for the study. Out of the population about 35 percent of the beneficiaries were selected as the sample; the sample size was thus 108. Main variable of this study was the changes in crop cultivation and related activities. These sub-variables were changes in adoption of modern agricultural technology and changes in cropping pattern. The simplest amongst them are preparation of indices. Bose and Saxena (1965) developed an adoption index by asking farmers as how many improved practices recommended by the extension service. The summation of the number of years and the selected practices were used to make the index. A more rigorous and widely used method of measuring adoption by the formula of adoption quotient which was developed by Chattapadhyay (1963). Asaduzzamna (2002) used 3 point scale namely 'regularly', 'occasionally' and 'rarely' to measure the extent of adoption of homestead vegetable production technologies. Aurangozeb (2002) developed 4 point scale namely 'high', 'medium', 'low', 'not at all' to measure the nature of adoption of integrated homestead farming technologies. The beneficiaries were asked to indicate the use of 20 selected crop cultivation and other selected activities before and after implementation of MDIP

Achievement/Findings:

The use of modern agricultural technologies by the beneficiaries increased significantly. This fact leads one to conclude that MDIP activities in the area clearly demonstrated the positive impact in diffusing modern agricultural technologies. The number of crops cultivated by the beneficiaries in the existing three cropping seasons namely rabi, kharif-1 and kharif-2 increased remarkably in the project area. This leads to the conclusion that the number of crops cultivated by the beneficiaries increased in the MDIP areas because of providing flood and drainage facilities through the construction of embankments.
