An experiment was conducted on a silty loam soil at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, from November 1999 through February 2000 with the objective of screening twelve mustard varieties to four date of sowing, viz. 7, 15 and 23 November, and 1 December 1999. The results revealed that late sowing consistently reduced seed yield. The magnitude of seed yield reduction was very high with Tori-7 along with the high yielding varieties like SS-75, TS-72,  BINAsharisa-3, BINAsharisa-4, BARisharisa-6, BARisharisa-7, BARisharisa-8 and Shampad. Among these varieties seed yield reduction ranged from 49-72%. Plant height reduced in general with delaying he date of sowing. The tallest plants were obtained mainly between the first and second dates of sowing. Biological yield followed the similar trends to that of seed yields with the only difference that unlike seed yield, the biological yield for all varieties attained peak up to the third date of sowing. The last date of sowing (1 Dec.) produced the reduced values of biological yield, but Rai-5, RS-81 and Shambal were the least affected in this case. On the basis of seed yield, plant height and biological yield, the four varieties e.g. Rai-5, Rai-81, BARisharisa-7 and Shambal were graded as the late sown performer.

To select mustard varieties that are capable to give an acceptable yield at late sowing.

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the rabi season (November-March) of 1999-2000. The soils were characterized by silty loam in texture with pH 6.7. The experiment included four sowing dates-7, 15 and 23 Nov., and 1 Dec. and twelve mustard varieties-Tori-7, Rai-5, RS-81, SS-75, TS-72, BINAsharisa-3, BINAsharisa-4, BARisharisa-6, BARisharisa-7, BARisharisa-8, Shampad and Shambal. The basic experiment having 48 treatment combinations was replicated three times within a randomized block design.  As per treatment of sowing dates, seeds were further sown on 15, 23 November and 1 December 1999 in the specified plots. Re-working of the soil with spade was needed due to development of soil compaction and appearance of weed vegetation in soils during the interim periods. Each plot received a general dose of TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate @ 170, 85, 150 and 5 kg ha-1 as pre-planting basal applications. There were two rates of nitrogen fertilizer-120 kg N ha-1 for the exhaustive varieties and 80 kg N ha-1 for the local or locally improved varieties. Urea was the source for N-fertilizer. Nitrogen was added in two equal splits-one at 7 days after emergence (DAE) and the other at 30 DAE. The crop was weeded two times and one irrigation given at 25 DAE. Two insecticidal sprays were required with Zithiol 50 EC @ 454 ml ha- 1 , one at pre-flowering and other at end flowering stages. One fungicidal spray with Rovral 50 WP @ 1 kg ha-1 was needed to protect crops for the first two seeding dates. While two sprays were required for the third and fourth sowing. At maturity, yield components were assessed from ten selected plants taken from each plot. The whole plots were then harvested to record seed yields. Data were analyzed following the ANOVA technique and means were adjudged with Duncun's Multiple Range Test

The main treatment effects viz. sowing date and variety as well as their interaction did highly significantly (P>0.01) influence the seed yield. Other parameter studied viz. plant height and the main and interaction effects also influenced biological yields. The delayed sowing of mustard from 7 Nov. through 1 Dec. reduced seed yields consistently and the difference in seed yields between two successive dates were also significant. Seven 7 Nov. sowing produced the highest seed yield of 1.58 t ha-1 and this reduced to less than one ton (0.69 t ha-1 with sowing seeds on 1 Dec. A further calculation shows that each week delay in sowing from 7 Nov. onwards prduced 19, 41 and 56% lower seed yields. The order of higher seed yield in relation to sowing dates was 7 Dec.>15 Nov.>23 Nov.>1 Dec. The trends in biological yields of the crops were pretty similar to that of seed yields . In general, the highest biological yield in each variety was attained in the first sowing data (7 Nov.) and thereafter, the biological yields reduced. At the fourth sowing date (1 Dec.), the range of reduction varied between 17-63%. The maximum reduction in biological yield occurred in BARisharisa-6, TS-72, BINAsharisa-3, BINAsharisa-4 and BARisharisa-8. Medium yield reductions occurred in varieties Tori-7, Rai-5, Shampad, BARisharisa-7, Tori-7 and SS-75. On the other hand, the minimum yield reductions were found in varieties in Rai-5, RS-81 and Shambal. On the basis of overall performance of seed yield, plant height, pods plant-1 and biological yield, it appears that BARisharisa-7, Shambal, RS-81 and Rai-5 had the acceptable performance with respect to late sowing conditions of Mymensingh up to 1 Dec. Therefore, these four varieties each yielding around (Shambal, RS-81 and Rai-5) and more . (BARisharisa-7) than one ton per hectare may be considered them as the late season performer and to recommend them to be accommodated in he T. aman rice-mustard cropping sequence.
