The experiment was carried out in the Laboratory of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from May to October, 2001 to study the effect of types of storage containers and storage period on the quality of soybean seeds. Treatments composed of four types of storage containers viz. Glass container, Tin container, Plastic container and polythene bag and six storage periods viz. 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days. Treatments were assigned to Completely Randomized design (CRD). The effect of storage container had significant effect on all the parameters except vigour index. Polythene bag showed the highest achievement for the parameters of germination percentage, shoot and root length, shoot and root dry mass as compared with the other three containers. Seeds stored in polythene bag had the highest germination (75.06%). Storage period had also significant effect on all the parameters. Germination, vigour index, shoot and root length, shoot and root dry mass gave the best response after 30 days of storage period. With the advancement of storage period, germination percentage had significantly decreased. The highest germination (86.65%) was found after 30 days of storage period. Therefore, storage of soybean seeds, stored in polythene bag for the period of 30 days appear to be the best for storage.

To find out the suitable storage container and optimum storage period for the quality of soybean seeds

Seeds of soybean was collected from the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and the experiment was carried out in the Laboratory of the same Department. Two sets of treatments, Set one (Container-4)-Giass container-C1 , Tin container-C2 , Plastic container-C3 and Polythene bag-C4, set two-(Storage period-6)-30 days-P1 , 60 days-P2 , 90 days-P3, 120 days-P4, 150 days-P5 and 180 days-Ps. The pucca floor of the Agronomy Field Laboratory was used for pre-storage drying. The seeds were spread over at a thickness of 1 cm and periodically stirred for uniform drying. The seed samples were cooled over-night spreading over the floor of seed Godown. Temperature and moisture content were measured before the seeds put into the different types of storage containers. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized design (CRD). Six times sampling was carried out at 30 days interval up to 180 days and each samples was taken randomly from each storage container. After counting the number of seedlings for germination test, randomly selected 10 seedlings were carefully uprooted and then the shoot and root length of uprooted seedlings were measured by a centimeter scale by separating the root portion carefully. The shoot and root samples were packed separately in paper bags and dried in an electric oven maintaining 72°C temperature for 36 hours. After drying, the root and shoot dry weight was recorded by an electric balance. Data were recorded for germination percentage, vigour index, shoot length of seedling (cm), root length of seedling (cm), shoot dry mass/10 seedlings (g) and root dry mass /10 seedlings (g). The highest germination 75.06% and 86.65% were recorded in polythene bagged seeds and 30 days of storage period, respectively. The lowest germination of 72.51% and 61.89% were found in plastic container and 180 days of storage period, respectively. It was clear that with the longer storage period, the germination percentage significantly decreased. Maximum vigour index of 22.07 and 23.16 were obtained from tin container and 30 days of storage period, respectively  and the minimum of 21.44 and 18.82 were observed in plastic container and 180 days of storage period, respectively.  With respect to shoot length of seedling, the longest shoot 18.68 em and 20.27 em were obtained from polythene bas stored seed and 30 days of storage period, respectively. The shortest shoot of 17.79 cm and 14.67 cm were measured in plastic container stored seed and 180 days of storage period, respectively While the lowest root dry mass 0.1 g, 0.1g and 0.1g were obtained from plastic container stored seeds, 180 days of storage period and the interaction between glass container and 150 days of storage period. From the study, polythene bag was found best for the storage and quality of soy bean seeds in terms of germination percentage and vigour index that decreased with increasing storage period. These techniques can be practiced for storing soybean seed
