Yield trials with two of the most promising mutants, MM20 and BINA-2, developed through gamma-irradiation of seeds, were carried out in the high saline areas at Khulna, Satkhira, Sonagazi and Patuakhali from 1998-99 to 2001-02. The results on days to maturity ranged from 85 to 90 days of MM20 and Binasarisha-3 (check) while Binasarisha-4 (check) took 78 to 86 days , and BINA-2 and Barisarisha-8 (check) matured one week later than MM20. Plant height of MM20 and the check was found to be shorter than BINA-2. Average seed yield (over locations and years), MM20 and BINA-2 produced 1.41 and 1.31 tons ha-1, respectively while Binasarisha-3, Binasarisha-4 and Barisarisha-8 gave 1.19, 1.25 and 1.20 tons ha-1, respectively. moreover, both the mutants showed better performances for other important characters, such as number of pods plant-1', number of seeds pod-1 and 1000-seed weight. Moreover, they showed tolerance to Alternaria blight with low aphid infestation under saline field condition. Seed coat colour was reddish brown in MM20 and light yellow in BINA-2. Soil salinity level varied from 1.9 to 4.7 dS/m in November. Thereafter, it began to rise from December to January and was high, ranged from 8.5 to 13.3 dS/m in February at the crop maturity stage. Economic analysis showed that the mutant MM20 gave a maximum net benefit of Tk. 16,116/- followed by BINA-2 with net benefit of Tk. 15,230/-. Consequently, the National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved MM20 and BINA-2 as two salt tolerant varieties, namely Binasarisha-5 and Binasarisha-6, respectively for cultivation across the saline belt of the country.

To evaluate of salt tolerant varieties of Brassica oil crops using gamma rays.

Yield performance of the selected two mutants MM-20 and BINA2, derived from selections in M2-M4 generations, were tested across the dominant saline areas of Satkhira and Khulna for two years, at the BRRI station, Sonagazi, Feni for three years and at the FSR site, OFRD, BARI, Kalapara, Patuakhali for two years during 1998-99 to 2001-02 (4 years). Almost all the sowing was done in late November after the harvest of T. aman rice. All the trials were laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. Recommended fertilizer doses of NPKS and boron were applied during land preparation. Performances of the mutants for maturity period, plant height, number of pods planf 1 and number of seeds pod-1 , 1000-seed weight, seed yield (kg ha-1} and oil content (%) were recorded and the mean values were used in statistical analysis. Alternaria blight infection and aphid infestation were also evaluated under field condition. Salinity level (EC=dS/m) during the cropping seasons for all the four years was also recorded.

The individual years as well as location wise results on seed yield (kg ha-1 ).  The mutant MM20 gave the significantly highest yield at all the years and locations, except the Khulna and Sonagazi locations where BINA-2 produced the highest seed yield ha-1 followed by MM20 in 1998-99 and 2000-01. However, the difference between them was statistically non-significant. Yield potential of BINA-2 was higher than the check varieties in most of the locations. Average seed yield (over locations and years), MM20 and BINA-2 produced 1.41 and 1.31 tons ha-1, respectively while the check varies. Binasarisha- 3, Binasarisha-4 and Barisarisha-8 gave 1.19, 1.25 and 1.20 tons ha-1 , respectively. Economic analysis showed that the mutant MM20 gave a maximum net benefit of Tk. 16,116/- followed by BINA-2 with Tk. 15,230/- . Important characteristics of the most promising mutants, MM20 and BINA-2 compared to the check varieties under saline soils . Maturity period ranged from 85 to 90 days in MM20 and Binasarisha-3 while Binasarisha-4 took 78 to 86 days to mature. BINA-2 and Barisarisha-8 matured one week later than MM20. Plant height of MM20 and three check varieties was found to be shorter than the mutant BINA-2. Performance of the two mutants was found to be better than the check for other characters, viz., number of pods planf 1 , number of seeds pod•1 and 1000-seed weight. Oil content (%) was found to be similar in the mutants and check. The mutant MM20 had reddish brown seed coat colour while it was light yellow in BINA-2.
