An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from March to July 2004 to study the effect of seed size and harvesting method on the seed quality of summer mungbean (Vigna radiata L) cultivars. The experiment consisted of three cultivars viz. BINA moog-5, BAR I moog-5 and BARI moog-2, three seed sizes viz. large, small and unassorted seed and two harvesting methods viz. stalk cutting and individual pod collection. The experiment was laid out in split-split plot design with three replications. Harvesting of the crop was done accordingly when 80% pods were matured. The following quality attributes i. e. germination percentage, seedling dry weight, root length of seedling, shoot length of seedling and vigour index were studied under treatment wise at the Agronomy Seed Laboratory. Germination percentage, root and shoot length of seedlings, seedling dry weight and vigour index of harvested seeds were significantly higher in favour of large seed size, followed by unassorted seed and small seed size with significant difference in each case.

To study the effect of seed size, harvesting methods and harvesting time on seed quality of mungbean cv. BINA moog-5, SARI moog-5 and SARI moog-2.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh d ring the period from March to July 2004.  The experiment consisted of three cultivars viz. BINA moog-5, BARI moog-5 and BARI moog-2, three seed sizes viz. large, small and unassorted and two harvesting methods viz. individual pod collection and stalk cutting method. The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot design with three replications assigning the variety in main plot, seeds size in the subplot and harvesting method in the unit plot. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2 m. The spacing between replications and subplots and unit plots, were 1 m, 0.5 m and 0.25 m, respectively. Twenty, 30 and 25 kg/ha of N, P205 and K20, respectively were applied through urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash. All the fertilizers were applied during the final land preparation. Normal cultural practices were followed during the period of crop growth. Harvesting of the crop was done accordingly when 80% pods were matured The seeds were studied under treatment wise at the Agronomy Seed Laboratory, Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University to determine the following quality attributes i. e. germination percentage , seedling dry weight, root length of seedling, shoot length of seedling and vigour index. Earthen pots were filled up with well ground soil and 100 seeds/pot was placed for germination per treatment. The germination/pot was counted on 7 days after placement and results were expressed in percentage. The daily record of germination of seeds was kept standing from 41 day up to 101 day after placement of seeds for germination. Vigour index was calculated by the following formula (Agrawal, 1991).

The interaction effect of seed size and harvesting method was found statistically significant in respect of seedling dry weight. The maximum seedling dry weight (0.124 g/plant) was. found from large seed size with individual pod collection method and the minimum (0.093 g/plant) was from small seed size with stalk cutting method. It was observed that the interaction effect of seed size and harvesting method in respect of vigour index was significant. The highest (10.66) vigour index was recorded from large seed size with individual pod collection method and the lowest (7.33) was recorded from unassorted seed size with stalk cutting method.

From the above discussion, it can be concluded that BINA moog-5 with large seed size and individual pod picking method seem to be the best among the varieties, seed sizes and harvesting methods for better seed quality of Mungbean.
