An experiment was conducted during the rabi seasons of 2003 to 2005 to study the performance evaluation of shallow tubewells for maximizing the productivity and water quality for irrigation and drinking purposes. Six shallow tubewells (STWs), two located at Baira village of Baira union and the other four at Bhatipara village of Char Nilakshmia union, both under Sadar upazila of Mymensingh district, were selected for the study.These STWs were operated at 50% of the rated engine capacities. The productivity of Baira STWs varied from 174 to 212 percent and that Bhatipara STWs varied from 109 to 246 percent and this may be increased by applying proper management practices with respect to soil, water and crop.   1. To evaluate the performance of shallow tubewell at farm level.

Conveyance loss: The Conveyance Loss was measured by inflow and outflow method using cut-throat flumes for four conditions. These were natural condition, compaction by Ourmus, mixture of cowdung and rice husk (1:1) and polythene sheet. Determination of discharge; Determination of conveyance loss: Questionnaire survey: A questionnaire was developed and survey was carried out and data on total irrigated area, water charge for various crops, fuel charge for land cultivation, crop yields, cost of fertilizers, problems and management of shallow tubewell were collected through on-spot visit and interviewing the owner of shallow tubewells and the beneficiaries from both sites of sadar upazila under Mymensingh.Water quality parameters: In total 6 water samples were collected, 4 from the shallow tubewells of Bhatipara village and 2 samples from the shallow tubewells of Baira village. Samples were labeled and then transferred immediately to the Central Laboratory of BAU for chemical analyses of pH, EC, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, As, Fe and HC03 to determine the various parameters related to water quality. Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR): Soluble Sodium Percentage (SSP): Residual Sodium Bi-Carbonate (RSBC): Magnesium Adsorption Ratio (MAR): Kelly's Ratio (KR): Arsenic: Arsenic was determined in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Central Laboratory by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotemetry method.

Using a mixture of cowdung and rice husk as lining material the loss was less than the channel under natural and compacted condition because percolation and lateral movement of water were less. The horse power (hp) of the engines were 12 for STW-1, 8 for STW-2, STW-3 and STW-6, 3 for STW-4 and STW-5. These STWs were operated at 50% of the rated engine capacities. The productivity of Baira STWs varied from 174 to 212 percent and that Bhatipara STWs varied from 109 to 246 percent and this may be increased by applying proper management practices with respect to soil, water and crop. The highest productivity was 246 percent in case of STW-3 .Water charge for boro cultivation was Tk 3705 per ha and that for aman cultivation was Tk. 618 per ha for STV1-3 at Bhatipara site.All the groundwater samples for irrigation were excellent in respect of electrical conductivity (EC), normal in respect of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), satisfactory in respect of residual sodium bi-carbonate (RSBC), permissible in respect of soluble sodium percentage (SSP), practically neutral to alkaline in respect of pH and soft to slightly hard in respect of total hardness (TH). All the water samples were found harmful for soil with respect to magnesium adsorption ratio (MAR) and good for irrigation according to Kelly's ratio (KR). All the water samples were free from arsenic and iron contamination and good for drinking purposes.
