Micro and Beneficial Nutrient Release Pattern from Some Tree Leaf Litters in Chittagong Evergreen Forest Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The micro and beneficial nutrient release pattern of some tree leaf litters in Chittagong Evergreen Forest soils of Bangladesh was studied during the period from July to October, 2005 in an incubation experiment in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Leaf litters viz. eucalyptus, garjan, gamar and jam were added to the soil @ 2 g 100 g-¹ soil. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. A considerable amount of Zn was released from eucalyptus (4.73 µg g-¹soil) amended soil and lowest from gamar (3.38 µg g-¹soil) amended soil. The maximum release of Fe was recorded for all amendment at the end of incubation. The maximum amount of Mn was released from eucalyptus and garjan at day 10. The highest available Cu was released in garjan and jam litter treated soils at day 60. However, the release of Na was higher in jam and garjan than other litters. The micro and beneficial nutrient release pattern was of the order: Fe < Na < Mn < Zn and < Cu irrespective of the litters amended to the soil.

Objectives:

To examine the micro and beneficial nutrient release pattern from the leaf litters of some important tree species of Chittagong evergreen forest soils of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

An incubation experiment was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to October, 2005. Leaf litters viz. eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) , garjan (Dipterocarpus turbinatus), gamar (Gmelina a borea) and jam (Syzygium cumim) were collected from Chittagong Evergreen Forest.Undecomposed plant materials were removed by hand and the soil was sieved (< 2 mm). Samples were conditioned aerobically at room temperature and at 40% water holding capacity (WHC) for 10 days. This allowed the soil microbial population to stabilize, minimizing !he effects of soil handling and preparation . Immediate after conditioning the soil was used for amending leaf litters.The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Collected data were statistically analyzed by a computer using statistical package programme MSTAT-C developed by Russel (1986). A one way ANOVA was made by F variance test. The pair comparisons were performed by least significant difference (LSD) test at 5% level of probability (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The release of Zn was highest at day 60 in eucalyptus (4.73 µg g^-1 soil) amended soil and decreased slightly till day 90 of incubation . On the other hand, from day 30 to 60 days garjan and jam showed the increasing trend and afterwards it slightly decreased at the end of incubation.The release of Fe was highest at day 90 with all amended soils .But available Fe contents in all the leaf litter treated soils were significantly higher compared to control. From day 5 to day 60 Fe trend line change dramatically for all amended soils. After the initial release of available Fe at day 5, there was a marked fixation of Fe in all amended soils except control at day 15.The release of Mn was highest at day 10 for eucalyptus (8.87 µg g^-1 soil) amended soil and afterwards, it decreased till day 60 of the incubation period and then increased slightly at day 90. Available Cu varied making a peak at day 10 for eucalyptus (3.15 µg g-¹soil), garjan (3.05 µg g^{- 1} soil), jam (2.9µg g^-1soil) and gamar (2.82 µg g^-1 soil). But at day 60 of the incubation, garjan amended soil showed the maximum Cu release with jam and gamar being intermediate and eucalyptus showed the lowest rate, but significantly higher compared to control. After 15 days of incubation, all amended soil showed increasing trend. But from day 30 to the end of the incubation period, a decreasing trend was observed. The maximum Na was depicted in the soil amended with jam (29.46 µg g^{- 1} soil) at day 30 of incubation and it decreased thereof.
