Genetic Variability, Correlation and Path Analysis of Cucumber (cucumis Sativus L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to study on the variabilities, genetic parameters, characters association and path coefficients among yield and eight important horticultural characters, namely- number of lateral shoots, days to first female flower, days to first female flower, nodal position of first female flower, fruit length (em), Fruit diameter (cm), average fruit weight (g) and number of fruits per plant of forty two cucumber accessions. The accessions showed a wide range of variability for all the characters studied. The characters were also found to be highly heritable. Fruit yield had high positive value of r_g with number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight, fruit diameter, fruit length and number of lateral shoots. Number of lateral shoots and average fruit weight directly contributed to the yield. The plants with higher number of branches and weighty fruits may be considered as potent one.

Objectives:

To measure the variability among the different morphotypes present in nature for selecting the improved types and to obtain information about heterosis for further improvement of the crop.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the site of the project "Collection, Evaluation, Conservation and Utilization of landraces and wild relatives of Some Important Vegetables and Fruits of Bangladesh (CVFB)" of the Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November to April 2003.The experiment was laid out with RCBD design with three replications following a spacing of 2 m x 1.5 m. Seeds were firstly sown in the poly begs and then 20 days old seedlings were transferred to the main field. Intercultural operations were done as and when required. Data on number of lateral shoots, days to first male flower open, days to first female flower open, nodal position of first female flower open, fruit length, fruit diameter, average fruit weight, number of fruits per plant and yield per plant were recorded and analyzed statistically. Genotypic (S²_g) and phenotypic ( s²_p) variance were calculated as per Johanson et a/. (1995). Broad sense heritability (H²_b) was estimated by using the formula given by Hanson et al.(1965). Genotypic and Phenotypic Co-efficient of Variation (GCV and PCV) were worked out following the formula given by Bruton (1952). Phenotypic (r_p₎ and Genotypic (r_g) correlation co-efficients were done using the formula suggested by AI-Jibouri et a/. (1958). The path co-efficients were calculated as per the formula given by Dewey and Lu (1959).
