Change of Ph and P Transformation in Diammonium Phosphate Amended Three Contrasting Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted to study the transformation of P in alluvial, calcareous and red soils of Bangladesh. P @ 0, 110 and 220 D g g^-1soils were added as DAP fertilizer. Change of pH and available P transformation pattern were monitored over 90 days of incubation period at different intervals of time maintaining 30% soil moisture. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. DAP amendment irrespective of it's dose in all the three soils led to immediate increase in pH attaining maximum within three days after incubation and then declined progressively within the period of 30-40 days. Depending on soil types and fertilizer dose, P transformation varied significantly with the advancement of incubation period. Only 15 to 25% of the applied P was cycled during the whole incubation period. Highest rate of P transformation was observed in alluvial soil and the lowest in red soil while that of calcareous soil being intermediate. At the end of incubation time, significant amounts of P existed in available form, which clearly indicates the residual effect of DAP fertilizer. The overall findings of this study thus suggest that the application of DAP may be encouraged as a source of P to well maintain available P as well as pH of the soil.

Objectives:

To examine the changes in soil pH and transformation pattern of P after the addition of DAP in alluvial, calcareous and red soils of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The incubation experiment was conducted in the laboratory of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry and Central laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The soils were collected from the selected areas of Sadar Upazila of Mymensingh district, lshurdi Upazila of Pabna district and Madhupur Upazila of Tangail district, The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications.Exactly 100 g soil samples were taken into a triplicate series of 150 cm³ plastic container. Thirty ml of distilled water was added to maintain soil moisture content at field capacity (30% moisture). All the treated soils were incubated for 90 days at room temperature (25 ± 1⁰C). Soil pH and available P contents were determined at 0, 3, 6, 10, 15, 22, 30, 40, 50, 70 and 90 days after incubation. The amount of water lost due to evaporation during the incubation period was determined at 2-3 day intervals from the beginning of the experiment. Therefore, each pot was weighed regularly by an electrical balance. The required amount of distilled water was added to all recipients to maintain the moisture level at field capacity.Soil pH was measured using a glass electrode pH meter (WTW pH 522) at a soil water ratio of 1:2.5. Available P was extracted with 0.5 M NaHC0₃ at a pH 8.5. The P in the extract was determined by stannous chloride method. The intensity of blue colour of molybdophosphate complex was measured with the help of spectrophotometer (Spectronic 21D) set at 660nm.The data were analyzed statistically by F-test.
