An experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from November 2003 to March 2004 to study the effect of time of irrigation and split application of nitrogen on the yield of wheat (cv. Gourab). Three levels of irrigation applied, one each at crown root initiation (CRI). panicle initiation and grain filling stage and four levels of time of nitrogen comprising no nitrogen, two equal split one at basal (110 kg of urea ha-1) and the other at 30 DAS (110 kg of urea ha-1). two equal splits one each at 10 DAS (110 kg of urea ha-1) and 40 DAS (110 kg of urea ha-1, three splits one each at 10 DAS (73.3 kg of urea ha-1). 40 DAS (73.3 kg of urea ha-1) and the other at 60 DAS (73.3 kg of urea ha-1). were included as experimental treatments. The experiment was laid 6ut in split-plot design with three replications assigning irrigation in the main plots and the splitting of nitrogen in the sub-plots. The results revealed that effective and non effective tillers plant-1. number of grains spike-1 and grain yield were significantly influenced by irrigation and splitting of nitrogen. The highest grain yield of 2.76 t ha-1 was obtained by three irrigations. On the other hand, three splitting of nitrogen gave the highest yield of 3.24 t ha-1. The highest grain yield was obtained with three irrigations coupled with three split applications of nitrogen (3.41 t ha-1).

To determine the effect of time of irrigation and split application  of nitrogen on the yield of wheat.

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laborator y of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 2003 to March 2004. The experiment comprised of two sets of treatments. The first set - three levels of irrigation treatments viz. one irrigation at crown root initiation (18 DAS) (11), two irrigations- one each at CRI (18 DAS) and panicle initiation stage ( 55 DAS) (1 2 ) and three irrigations- one at CRI (18 DAS), panicle initiation (55 DAS) and grain filling stage (80 DAS) (13) and the second set - f our type of split applications of nitrogen namely, N0 (no nitrogen application), N, ( Y2 N at basal + Y2 N at 30 DAS), N2 ( Y2 N at 10 DAS + Y2 N at 40 DAS) and N3 C/3 N at 10 DAS + 1/3 N at 40 DAS + 1/3 N at 60 DAS) at specific growth stages. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots were allocated f or irrigation treatments and subplots for the nitrogen treatments. The land was fertilized with 180, 50 and 120 kg ha-1 of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. Nitrogen was applied as per experimental specification through urea @ 220 kg ha-1 . Seeds of variety Gourab were sown in furrows at the rate of 120 kg ha-1 in 20 cm apart lines on 7 December 2003. The experimental plot was irrigated as . per the experimental treatments. Proper care was taken at the time of irrigation to avoid the flow of irrigation water coming through the channel. The crops were harvested plot wise separately on 20 March 2004 (102 days after sowing). Prior to harvesting 5 plants were selected randomly from each plot and uprooted carefully for collecting data on yield contributing characters. The seed and straw weight for each plot were recorded after sun drying to constant weight. The collected data were anal y zed statistically following the ANOVA-technique with the help of MSTAT-C software. The mean differences among the treatment means were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test

It may be concluded within the scope and limitation of the present study that the optimum growth and higher yield of wheat cv. Gourab could be obtained by applying three irrigations at crown root initiation, panicle initiation and grain filling stage with three splits of nitrogen. However, further studies are necessary to arrive at a definite conclusion.
