 A pot experiment was carried out under semi controlled environment at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur during the period from November 2001 to May 2002 to determine the effect of nitrogen fertilizer (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg N ha'') application on yield, nutrient (N, P, S) content and uptake by different plant parts of three groundnut varieties (Dhaka-1, Zhingabadam and Basantibadam). Marked variation in N, P, S content and uptake in different plant parts were .observed among the treatments and across the growth stages. Nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur contents in leaf and stem were highest at pre-flowering stage and then decreased while in the reproductive organs (pod and seed) N, P and S accumulation continued till maturity. Basantibadam showed significantly higher N, P, S uptake and pod yield than Dhaka-1 and Zhingabadam. TheN, P, S content and uptake in different plant parts were maximum with higher N (40-60 kg ha-1) application. Application of 40-60 kg N ha-1 gave higher yield due to increase in 100-seed weight and pod plant-1.

To get a clear understanding of N, P and S concentration in different parts of plant, their uptake pattern and yield performance of three groundnut varieties under different levels of nitrogen fertilization.

A pot experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur under semi controlled environment during the period from November 2001 to May 2002. Groundnut plants were raised in cylindrical earthen pot of 26 em diameter and 24 em height each containing 12 kg soil. Four levels of nitrogen (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg N ha-1 and three varieties of groundnut (Dhaka-1, Zhingabadam and Basantibadam) were used as experimental materials. The trial was set up in a completely randomized design under factorial arrangement with five replications. The source of nitrogen was urea. A blanket rate of 26 kg P, 42 kg K and 30 kg S ha-1 in the form of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum was added and well mixed with the soil before pouring into the pots. Cowdung was applied. at the rate of 5 t ha-1 . The applied cowdung contains 0.51% N. In each pot, four seeds were sown on November, 12, 2001. At three-leaf stage of crop the seedlings were thinned out keeping one healthy seedling for uniform growth in each pot. The pots were watered with half litter of water in the evening at two days interval. Ripcord 10 EC at the rate of 1 ml litre-1 of water was sprayed at 40 and 70 days after emergence (DAE) to control catapillar. Bavisteen (at the rate of 2 g litre-1 of water) was sprayed three times at an interval of 25 days starting from 30 DAE as preventive measure "Tikka" disease (Cercospora personata). Nitrogen, P and S content and uptake in leaves, stems, pods and seeds of groundnut were determined at three different times corresponding to pre-flowering, pod development and maturity stages. Uptake of nutrients by the plant taken as product of dry matter multiplied by their contents in dry matter. At maturity, 100-seed weight and pod yield plant-1 were recorded. The collected data were statistically analyzed using MSTAT computer package program and means were separated by least significant difference (LSD) test (P = 0.05) for interpretation.

The study indicates that nutrient uptake is higher during reproductive to pod development stage. Use of variety Basantipadam and application of 40-60 kg N ha-1 could give higher pod yield.
