Studies on Morphological Characterization of Fourteen Pummelo Germplasm (citrus Grandis L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out under the Fruit Tree Improvment Programme (FTIP) at Bangladesh Agricultural University Germplasm Centre (BAU-GPC), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from April, 2012 to November 2012 to evaluate the morphological characteristics of fourteen germplasm of pummelo (Citrus grandis L.). Highly significant variations were observed in all parameters studied among 14 accessions of pummelo. The maximum fruit weight (1675.00 g) was recorded in accession number CG-01followed by accession number CG-02 (1350.00 g). The highest fruit diameter (14.65 cm), rind thickness (2.61 cm), length of segments (16.50 cm), pulp weight (1250.00 g) and TSS % (23.50) were also found in accession number CG-01. The stydy showed that the accession number CG- 01 was the best in respect of qualitative and quantitative characters followed by accession number CG-12.

Objectives:

To identify superior pummelo germplasm.

Methodology:

The present study was conducted to evaluate the morphological characteristics of fourteen germplasm (accession) of pummelo under the Fruit Tree Improvement Programme (FTIP) at Bangladesh Agricultural University Germplasm Centre (BAU-GPC), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from April 2012 to November 2012. Single factor experiment was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Fourteen accessions were considered as the experimental treatment. Single plant of each germplasm were considered as a replication. Germplasm CG-01, CG-02, CG-03, CG-04, CG-05, CG-06, CG-07, CG-10, CG-11, CG-12, CG-13 and CG-14 were collected from different districts of Bangladesh. Germplasm CG-08 and CG-09 were collected from Thailand and Malaysia. Morphological characterization of fruits like fruit shape, skin color, smoothness of skin, sweetness, softness of pulp vesicle, juiciness of pulp vesicle, color of pulp vesicle, fruit appearance, fruit weight, fruit diameter, rind thickness, number of segment per fruit, length of segments, pulp weight and total soluble solid (TSS) percentage all were studied in details.

Under the study fourteen pummelo germplasm were selected and morphologically characterized. In response to fruit weight it was maximum (1675 g) in the accession number CG-01 followed by accession number CG-02 (1350 g) while it was minimum in accession number CG-07 (350 g). The highest fruit diameter (14.65 cm), rind thickness (2.61 cm), length of segments (16.50 cm), pulp weight (1250 g) and TSS % (23.50) were also found in accession number CG-01. So, it can be concluded that the accession number CG-01 is the best in respect of qualitative and quantitative characters.
