Role of Ngo in Transfer of Technology: an Appraisal of Storing of Modern Rice Seeds in Organic Cocoon Through Petrra Project in Rdrs

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main focus of the study was to determine knowledge, skills and behavioral changes of the resource poor PETRRA beneficiaries on the organic cocoon and compare those with the neighboring farmers (non-PETRRA beneficiaries). The study also aimed at identifying the problems of storing of modem rice seeds in organic cocoon. The study further tried to differentiate the resource poor PETRR A and non-PETRRA beneficiaries regarding their nine selected characteristics and to explore the relationships of the selected characteristics with the knowledge, skills and behavioral change towards organic cocoon for quality seed preservation. Data were collected from 75 stratified randomly selected PETRRA beneficiaries who have formal participation in RDRS Union federation and 75 purposively selected non-PETRRA beneficiaries who have not formal participation either in PETRRA project nor in RDRS Union federation from the study area during March to May 2001. Chi-square and correlation tests as well as T-statistic was used in order to analyze data in fulfilling the objectives. Throughout the study 0.05 level of probability has been used as the basis for statistical significance.

Objectives:

1.To determine knowledge, skills and behavioral changes among resource poor PETRRA beneficiaries on the organic cocoon and compare those with the neighboring farmers (non-PETRRA beneficiaries).

2. To identify the problems of storing of modem lice seeds in organic cocoon.

3.. To explore the relationships between the knowledge, skills and behavioral changes of the PETRRA beneficiaries and non-PETRRA beneficiaries on the organic cocoon and their selected individual characteristics.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in Kaligonj Upazila under Lalmonirhat district. Out of 8 Unions from this Upazila only one namely, Tushvandar was randomly selected for conducting the research. From the 150 PETRRA beneficiaries, 75 were selected at stratified random sampling. Similarly, an equal proportion (75) of non-PETRRA beneficiaries from the neighboring farmers who have not formal participation either in PETRRA project nor in RDRS federation, were selected purposively Data collected by the researcher himself through interviewing the farmers with the help of interview schedule Simple and direct questions and scales were included in the interview schedule. Data obtained from the respondents were coded. compiled. tabulated and analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study Resources poor farmers ' knowledge on organic cocoon, skills on production, processing and storing of modem rice seeds and behavioral change towards organic cocoon were the dependent variables of the study. Nine characteristics of the farmers were selected as independent variable. The characteristics were age, education, family size, farm size, extension media contact, annual income, innovative ness, fatalism and aspiration Statistical measures such as number and percentage distribution, range, average, standard deviation were used in describing the dependent and independent variables. poor PETRRA beneficiaries and non-PETRRA beneficiaries in respect of the independent and dependent variables Chi-square (i) test and t-statistic were used respectively. Throughout the study at least five per cent (0.05) level of probability were used as the basis for rejection of any null hypothesis.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings demonstrate that PETRRA and non-PETRRA beneficiaries differed significantly in respect of their behavioral change towards organic cocoon. About two thirds (64 per cent) PETRRA beneficiaries fell in good change category but in case of non-PETRR. beneficiaries the percentage of good change was very negligible (only 9 per cent). The possible reasons for this variation are due to the active participation of cow poor PETRRA beneficiaries with the federation, their higher completeness, higher media contact and innovative ness than their neighboring farmers. Nevertheless. the non-beneficiary farmers changed their agricultural behaviors to a moderate extent following their neighbors who ha ve the formal membership in federation. Technologies are of no use unless they are used by their potential users. The findings also imply that although the PETRRA beneficiaries had considerably changed their behaviors towards organic cocoon, this tendency was not, however, observed promisingly among the non-PETRRA beneficiaries.
