Farmers' Attitude Towards Organic Homestead Gardening Programme of World Vision

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purposes of the study was to investigate the attitude of the "World Vision" farmers towards organic homestead gardening program, problem faced by them in practicing organic homestead gardening and also to explore the relationships with selected characteristics of World Vision farmers . Three unions of Sariakandi upazilla of Bogra district namely Narchi, Fulbari and Bhelabari were selected for this study. From these 3 unions 4 villages namely Kuptala, Ranmagor, Bhelabari and Saihata were selected as locale of the study. Out of 400 World Vision farmers of these 4 villages 100 (25 percent) farmers were selected as the sample for this study. Data were collected with the help of an interview schedule from the "World Vision" farmers during August 1 to September 10, 2001. Farmers ' attitude towards organic homestead gardening programme of the "World Vision" was ascertained through a 5-point Likert type scale. Coefficient of correlation was used in order to analyze data in fulfilling objectives. The findings revealed that the highest proportion (64 percent) of the World Vision tanners had moderately favorable attitude towards organic homestead gardening programme while 16 percent had highly favorable attitude and only 20 percent had slightly favorable attitude towards "organic homestead gardening programme" respectively

Objectives:

1.To find out the extent of participation in organic homestead gardening practices as recommended by the World Vision.

2. To find out the problems faced by the World Vision farmers in practicing of organic homestead gardening.

3. To find out farmers' attitude towards organic homestead gardening program of the World Vision.

4. To explore the relationship between extent of farmers' attitude towards organic homestead gardening practices and each of the selected characteristics

Methodology:

Various statistical measures such as range, mean, percentage, standard deviation (SD) and ranks were used in describing both independent and dependent variables and problems faced by the World Vision farmers in practicing organic homestead gardening. Tables were also used in presenting the data for clarity of wide rstanding. "Pearson's product moment" correlation co-efficient was used to explore the relationship between any two variables. Five percent (0.05) level of probability was used as the basis for rejecting any null hypothesis.

Achievement/Findings:

Age of the World Vision farmers ranged from 17 to 50 with an average of 27.94 years and standard deviation of 5.48. The highest proportion (62 percent) of the farmers was middle aged white 38 percent was young and none was old. Education Education scores of the World Vision farmers ranged from 0.5 to 12 with an average of 6.34 and standard deviation of 3.32. The highest proportion (57 percent) of the farmers belonged to secondary level compared to 15 percent who could sign only, 25 percent in primary level and zero percent were illiterate respectively. Family size Family size of the World Vision farmers ranged from 2 to 13 with an average of 4.43 and standard deviation was 1.60.
