A field experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Farm, Mymensingh, during March to May 2006 with a view to study the effect of irrigation at various growth stages on yield and water use of summer mungbean. Two factors were included in the experiment, namely (i) four irrigation treatments which were; lo (no irrigation), I1 (two irrigations upto field capacity at vegetative stage), l2 (one irrigation upto field capacity at flowering stage) and l3 (one irrigation upto field capacity at vegetative and flowering stages), respectively, and (ii) two mungbean varieties, namely, Binamoog-5 (V1 and Binamoog-2 (V2). The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design having 3 replications. Each replication was divided into 4 main-plots (8 m x 3 m) having equal space of 1 m among them as buffer zone. Each main-plot was divided into 2 equal sub-plots (4 m x 3 m). The seeds were sown on 06 March 2006 and harvested on 31 May 2006. Texturally, the experimental soil was silt loam. Irrigation treatments were imposed in the main-plots and varieties were in the sub-plots at random. Recommended doses of urea, TSP and MP were applied at the final land preparation. Line to line and plant to plant distances were 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Weeding and other plant protection measures were done as and when necessary. Soil samples were collected before sowing as well as before each irrigation which were then oven dried and soil moisture was calculated. At harvest, data were collected from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and grain yield was recorded from the whole plot. Among the irrigation treatments, highest yield (1363 kg ha-1) was obtained in  l1 ,but the lowest yield (1032 kg ha-1) was obtained in l0 treatment (no irrigation). On the other hand, among the varieties, Binamoog-5 showed better performance and produced the highest grain yield (1322 kg ha-1), whereas, the lowest (961 kg ha-1) was recorded in Binamoog-2. Considering the interaction effect between irrigation and variety, treatment combination V1l1 produced the highest grain yield (1480 kg ha-1) and the lowest (839 kg ha-1 ) was obtained in V2l2 treatment combination. The results also showed that water used by the crop varied from 7.70 to 9.00 em at different irrigation treatments. Thus, from experimental findings it revealed that one irrigation at vegetative stage seemed to be enough for growing summer mungbean at BAU farm.

To investigate the effect of irrigation on the yield and water use of summer mungbean.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Farm, Mymensingh, during 6 March to 31 May 2006. Two varieties of mungbean, namely, Binamoog-5 and Binamoog-2 (thereby referred to as V1 and V2, respectively) were collected from BINA. The experimental plot was laid out on 05 March 2006 following Split-Plot Design with three replications. In each replication four irrigation treatments as main-plots were placed side by side and each main-plot was divided into two sub-plots for both the varieties maintaining 1m distance between them. On the other hand, the replicates were placed maintaining a buffer zone of 1m distance between them. The individual plot size was 4 m x 3 m (12 m2).  Soil moisture status in the experimental field was measured by gravimetric method taking soil samples by means of a soil auger from depth at 0 to 25 cm i.e. upto the effective root zone. Field moisture status was monitored at the time of plantation, before and after each irrigation and at harvest. Data collected were plant population at germination and at harvest, soil moisture at sowing and at harvest and amount of irrigation applied. Meteorological data viz. pan evaporation; maximum and minimum temperatures, rainfall, sunshine hour and humidity were also collected from weather yard.

Thus, from the experimental results it revealed that a pre-sowing irrigation and a single irrigation (about 2.0 cm) at vegetative stage with the prevailing rainfall seemed to be sufficient to produce the optimum yield and water productivity of the two summer mungbean varieties at the BAU farm areas.
