Performances of Late Transplanted Aman Rice at Different Population Densities in Medium Highland

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at farmer's field, Kapasia, Gazipur to identify suitable late transplanted Aman variety at appropriate population density for increasing rice productivity in 1999. Three modern rice varieties were tested at four-plant spacings. BR23 and BR22 gave higher grain yield (3.61-3.81 t/ha) than Binasail. The higher grain yield of BR23 and BR22 was associated with higher number of panicles m^-2 and heavier grain weight. The spacing 15- x 15- cm produced significantly higher grain and total dry matter yield than all other spacings. Economic analysis indicated that higher gross margins of Tk 19,454 and 17,625 came from the varieties, BR23 and BR22, respectively, at same spacing, 15- x 15- cm.

Objectives:

To identify suitable late planted Aman variety at appropriate population density for good fit into the existing cropping system for increasing the productivity of medium high land phase-2.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at farmer's field at the Farming Systems Research and Development (FSR&D) site, Kapasia under Gazipur district during transplanted Aman season in 1999. Soil was clay loam in texture under Modhupur Tract (AEZ 28). Three photo period-sensitive varieties, BR22, BR23 and Binasail were tested with four spacings,15- x 15- cm, 15- x 10- cm, 15- x 5- cm and 20- x 15- cm. The treatments were assigned in a split plot design with four replications. Variety was placed in the main plot and spacing in the sub-plot.Thirty-five-day-old 3-4 seedlings/hill was transplanted on 25 September 1999. Potassium and phosphates were not applied. Only 60 kg N/ha was used. The plots were weeded at 25 days after transplanting (DAT). Crops were harvested on 22-27 December 1999. Plant height, yield components and total dry matter (TDM) production were recorded from eight randomly selected hills/plot and that of grain and straw yields from 10 m² plot. Grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture level. Data were analyzed statistically and Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) did mean comparison. Economic analysis was done based on prevailing market price of all input and output.
