Studies on the Effect of Preservation of Bush and Tree Mulberry Leaf on the Growth of Silkworm (bombyx Mori)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Silkworm larval weight increment in terms of growth rate and growth index were studied using different leaf preservation material viz,- gunny cloth, polythene bag and cotton cloth. Tree and bush mulberry leaves were used as food. The larval growth was lowest in both bush and tree batches of polythene preservation. Bush leaf with gunny preservation attained better growth rate and growth index. The reason might be bush leaf having higher moisture content than tree leaf and gunny cloth holds more moisture than other preservation material. The combined effect of these two promotes the larval growth.

Objectives:

To determine the larval weight increment in terms of growth rate and growth index

Methodology:

The experimental study was conducted in Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute (CSRTI). The experiment has been done nearly 15 years ago. Two commercially popular silkworm hybrids, namely, PM x NB4 D2 (Multivoltine and Bivoltine hybrid) and NB 18 x NB 7 (Bivoltine x Bivoltine) were used for the experiment. Total 72 DFLs (24 DFLs for each rearing) were reared in three trials - Tl (January- February 1992) , T2 (April.1992) & T3 (May .1992) . Each treatment has 3- replications of 300 larvae each after 3rd moult. From 1st instar to 3rd instar rearing was done in mass bed. Mu1 ulberry leaves that used were bush and tree leaf of Kanava-2 variety maintained in the garden of CSRTI. Materials used for leaf preservation were gunny cloth, polythene bag and cotton cloth.

Achievement/Findings:

The overall result indicates that bush leaf with gunny preservation achieved maximum larval growth rate and growth index which coincides the observations made by the earlier workers.
