Effects of Plant Spacing and Nk Fertilizers on Growth and Yield of Radish

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of four levels of plant spacing, viz. 50 x 45, 40 x 45, 50 x 30 and 40 x 30 em and four doses of nitrogen and potassium, viz., N_oK_o, N₁₄₀K₈₀, N₂₀₀ K₁₄₀. and N₂₅₀K₂₀₀kg/ha on growth and yield of radish were studied. Plant spacing had significant effect on plant height, length and diameter of root, dry weight of leaf, fresh and dry weight of root, root branching, root cracking and yield. Decrease in plant spacing increased the total yield of roots. The highest yield of roots (21.86 t/ha) was obtained from the closest spacing (40 x 30 cm). Different doses of nitrogen and potassium resulted significant variation in all the parameters studied except number of leaves per plant and percentage of root branching. Application of N₂₅₀oK₂₀₀ kg/ha produced the maximum root yield (20.17 t/ha). There were significant variations among the treatment combinations in all the parameters studied. The treatment combination of 50 x 30 cm plant spacing and N₂₅₀K₂₀₀ kg/ha produced the maximum root yield (25.17 t/ha) .

Objectives:

To study the effect of plant spacing and NK fertilizers on the growth and yield of radish cv.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November, 2005 to January, 2006. The soil of the experimental plot was sandy loam in texture belonging to the old Brahmaputra Flood Plain with a pH 6.4. The experiment consisted of four levels of plant spacing, viz. 50 x 45, 40 x 45, 50 x 30 and 40 x 30 em and four doses of nitrogen and potassium, viz., N₀K₀, N₁₄₀K₈₀, N₂₀₀K₁₄₀ and N₂₅₀K₂₀₀ kg/ha, laid out in randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The size of each unit plot was 2 m x 1.8 m. The plots were well prepared and raised up to 15 em. Seeds of radish cv. Tasaki San (BARI Mula-1) were sown on November 20, 2006. After 20 days of sowing, the seedlings were thinned out to specified spacing keeping one seedling per hill. The crop received cowdung and TSP at the rate of 10 t and 250 kg/ha as a basal dose. Nitrogen and potassium were applied as top dressing in the form of urea and MP, respectively, as per treatment in two equal splits at 21 and 35 days after sowing. Furfuran was applied @ 6 kg/ha during final land preparation as a preventive measure against cutworm, and other soil pests. The crop received three irrigations. Weeding and mulching were done when necessary. The crop was harvested on 20 January 2006. Data on growth and yield parameters were collected and analysed.

Achievement/Findings:

Plant spacing and different levels of nitrogen and potassium showed significant influence on plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves per plant root length, root diameter, fresh weight of root, dry matter content of leaves and roots and yield of roots. The highest root yield of 25.17t/ha radish cv. Tasaki San was obtained from the treatment combination of 50 x 30 cm spacing with N₂₅₀ K₂₀₀ kg/ha under the experimental conditions.
