Study on Genetic Divergence and Relationship Among Wild and Cultivated Rice Genotypes of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty seven cultivated (traditional cultivars) and three wild rice genotypes were studied through Mahalonobis"s 02 statistics for assessment of genetic divergence among them. Clustering was done by Tocher's method and the nature of magnitude of diversity in the rice genotypes. The genotypes were distributed in four clusters. Contribution of plant height was highest towards the total genetic divergence indicating the importance of this character, which ultimately influenced the clustering pattern. The inter cluster distances were higher than the intra-cluster distance revealed the genetic diversity among the cultivated and wild rice genotypes. Clusters showing maximum divergence among them were also genetically distant from each other for the relevant traits. Information on diverse rice genotypes will help to obtain heterotic rice genotypes and prospective parents to develop transgressive segregant.

Objectives:

To measure and identify the genetic distance among the breeding materials of rice which could be utilizes in selecting parents for crossing program.

Methodology:

Twenty-seven cultivated and three wild rice germplasms were included in the present study. The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications during 2001 Aman season at field laboratory of the Department Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Observations were recorded on randomly selected ten plants for taking data on 9 characters which included days to heading, days to maturity, plant height, tillers no. plant, average internode length, panicle length, filled spikelet panicle-1 , total spikelet panicle-1 and yield planf 1 . Genetic divergence among the 30 rice genotypes was assessed using Mahalonobis's 02 statistics . Collected data were analyzed for variance and covariance. The means of the characters were transformed into uncorrelated means by pivotal condensation method . The differences in the transformed uncorrelated mean values corresponding to each of the character were ranked in descending order of magnitude. The percentage of this rank 1 for individual character over all the possible 435 combinations was taken as the percent contribution for that character.

Achievement/Findings:

Analysis of variance indicated significant differences among the rice genotypes. Based on days to heading, days to maturity, plant height, tillers no. plant , average internode length, panicle length, filled spikelet panicle.,, total spikelet panicle., and yield plant , the genotypes grouped into 4 clusters .The number of genotypes in the clusters varied from 2 to 18. Eighteen varieties were in cluster I, eight varieties in cluster II and two varieties in cluster Ill and two in cluster IV. Assessment of the contribution of different characters to the genetic diversity revealed the importance of plant height , days to maturity , days to heading , yield plant , panicle length , filled spikelet panicle· , tillers no. plant . On the other hand yield contributing character viz. total spikelets panicle had less influence on genetic diversity.
