The study analyzes the assessment of Hybrid seed production cost at BRRI experimental station and comparative profitability of Hybrid rice versus BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 at the farm level The study reveals that cost of production for producing one-kilogram seed was lower for BRRI Hybrid-1 (Tk.56.47kg) compared to proposed Hybrid lines IR68877H (Tk.71.791kg). It was also observed that except seed use; the use of labour (family plus hired) and fertilizer was the higher in case of Hybrid rice compared to those of BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29. Though the requirement of seed was high for BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29, the cost of Hybrid seed was higher because of its high price. As a result, total cost of production for Hybrid rice was higher (Tk.3,60,669.00/ha) compared to BRRI dhan 28 (Tk 30,647.00/ha) and BRRI dhan 29 (Tk.31,345.00/ha). But the net return was higher in BRRl dhan 29 (Tk.15,899.00/ha) followed by BRRl dhan 28(Tk.12,170.00/ha) .Similarly benefit cost ratio was the higher in BRRl dhan 29 followed by BRRl dhan 28 and hybrid rice. But considering all MVs, the net return of Hybrid rice was the highest.

To estimate the cost of Hybrid rice seed production at the BRRI farm, determine the comparative profita.bility of BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 versus Hybrid rice production, identify the constraints of Hybrid rice cultivation and derive implication from the above

Both BRRI Hybrid experimental plot and farm household data were used to conduct this study. For collecting the experimental data a continuous monitoring work was done in different stages of Hybrid rice seed production. All necessary information were carefully recorded from the experimental plot with the help of structured questionnaire. On the other hand, a pre-designed questionnaire was used to collect the farm level data of Hybrid rice as well as BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 cultivation. The farm level survey was conducted at Chuadanga district during the Bora season. Two hundred sample farmers who cultivated both Hybrid rice and BRRI dhan28 & BRRI dhan29 were selected purposively and interviewed. Partial budgeting technique was used to determine the profitability of Inbred versus Hybrid cultivation in the survey area. Tabular analysis was mainly done for descriptive presentation of findings.

The output (as seed production) from BRRI Hybrid dhan-1 variety was much higher (2.30 ton/ha) than that of proposed IR68877H line (1.67 ton/ha). Per kilogram costs of Hybrid seed production was Tk.56.47 for BRRI Hybrid dhan-1 and Tk. 71.79 for IR68877H indicating that per kilogram cost of production for the proposed IR68877H variety was much higher compared to BRRI Hybrid dhan1 variety. Considering marketing cost total expenses (production & marketing cost) of BRRI Hybrid1 and IR68877H were Tk 59.62/kg Tk.74.94/kg, respectively . The average yield of F1 hybrid rice seed was 2300 kg/ha.An attempt was also taken to know the constraints of Hybrid rice cultivation at farms levels. Almost 93% farmers opined that per unit cost of production of Hybrid rice was higher than inbred rice. Ninety seven percent farmers mentioned that there is a great difference between the cultivation practices between hybrid and inbred rice and the farmers are not accustomed to that. The farmers also mentioned that still there is no substantial market demand for Hybrid rice since it was new phenomenon. About 81% farmers complained that Hybrid rice was not sold at the market due to lack of consumers' awareness (Table 9). The cost of producing per-kilogram Hybrid seed was Tk. 56.47 and Tk. 71.79 respectively for the BRRI Hybriddhan-1 and IR68877H. Rice production by the varieties, BRRidhan28 and BRRidhan 29 were more profitable than the hybrid rice varieties. Though BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 was profitable but considering all MVs, rice production by Hybrid rice was more profitable. Still farmers are not aware of the method of Hybrid rice cultivation. If they are trained, production of rice by Hybrid rice may be profitable than all other MVs like BRRidhan28 and BRRI dhan29 and would be expanded in the farmers' field for increasing future rice production in Bangladesh.
