Farmers' Attitude Towards Intregrated Plant Nutrient Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

: A study was conducted to ascertain the extent of attitude towards integrated plant nutrient management (IPNM) of farmers along with its contributing factors. Data were collected from 250 farmers through pretested interview schedule during June 2004 to February 2005 by multistage sampling procedure. Pukhra union of Baniachang upazila of Habiganj district was the study area. Results revealed that the two items of attitude towards IPNM, out of twelve were unfavorable. Highest proportion (68.80%) of the farmers fell in the moderately favorable attitude category followed by 20.40 percent unfavorable and 10.80 percent favourable attitude category. Awareness about pest hazards (43.70%), level of aspiration (5.90 %) and social participation (2.00%) were the best contributing factors which combinedly contributed 51.60 percent variation of farmers' attitude towards IPNM to the total explained variation of 56.10 percent.

Objectives:

1. To determine the level of attitude towards IPNM of the farmers of Haor areas

. 2. To explore the relationships between each of the selected characteristics of the farmers and their attitude towards IPNM.

Methodology:

Study locale and sampling procedure: Pukhra union of Baniachang upazila of Habiganj district was selected by multistage sampling procedure. Fifteen villages of Pukhra union were selected from 36 villages using random number. A total of 250 farmers out of 1061 from these 15 villages were selected through random number as the sample. Sample farmers were determined with sampling formula of Mortoza (2002). Variables measurement: Twenty-six attitude statements on integrated nutrient management were collected initially after adequate review of literature and in consultation with relevant experts. Collected items were edited and modified in the light of fourteen criteria of Edwards (1957). Content validity of all items of the scale was ascertained through judges rating. Reliability coefficient of scale was 0.928 for split half and 0.941 for test retest methods that were highly significant and indicated quite stable and dependable scale. Finally, 12 items were selected based on scale value, Q value and t value for final attitude scale and were randomly arranged in the scale. Data were collected through pre-tested interview schedule by face-to-face interview procedure. Farmers' attitude towards integrated nutrient management was the dependent variable and 12 selected characteristics of the farmers were considered as independent variables. The selected characteristics included: age, education, family education, family size, information sources use, supervision of rice cultivation practices, farm size, annual income, social participation, innovation proneness, level of aspiration and awareness about pest hazards. These independent variables were measured with the available scales developed by earlier authors with slight modification whenever needed. The respondents were asked whether they strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree and strongly disagree with weights of 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 respectively for the positive statements and reverse scoring system was followed for the negative statements. Total attitude score of a farmer towards integrated nutrient management was equal to the sum of the scores of all the twelve items of the attitude . scale. Thus, attitude score towards integrated . nutrient management could range from 12 to 60, 12 indicating unfavorable attitude and 60 indicating favorable attitude. Data were analyzed according to the objectives with Excel and SPSS packages.
