With a view to finding out the effect of seedling age on the performance of hybrid and inbred varieties of rice under SRI and conventional planting methods, the study was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from June to October 2002. The hybrid rice variety Sonarbangla-1 and inbred rice varie!y BRRI dhan33 were grown under SRI and conventional planting methods with seedlings of different ages such as 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 days. The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot design with three replications assigning planting system in the main plots, variety in the sub-plots and seedling age in the sub-sub plots. The results indicated that planting method, seedling age and variety influenced the different crop characters and yield but their interaction did not show any regular trend. SRI planting method produced the higher total number of tillers hill-1 and shorter plants than conventional planting method. Both varieties produced higher total number of tillers hill-1 under SRI planting practice. The seedlings at 15- day-old gave the highest total number of tillers hill-1 , effective tillers hill-1 , total spikelets and grains panicle-1, grain yield, straw yield and biological yield. The performance of SRI was better regarding yield and yield contributing characters. The highest grain yield was obtained from the SRI practice with 15-day-old seedling. Grain and straw yields were higher in Sonarbangla-1 than BRRI dhan33. Interaction of variety and seedling age had no significant effect on grain and straw yields. But, Sonarbangla-1 showed better performance when 15-day-old seedling was transplanted under SRI practice.

To determine the effect of age of seedling on the performance of hybrid and inbred varieties of rice grown under conventional and SRI practice.

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during aman season (June to October 2002) with a view to studying the effect of seedling age, planting method and variety on the performance of rice. The experiment comprised of three factors, namely (i) two planting methods i.e. SRI planting method and conventional planting method, (ii) two varieties i.e. Hybrid rice Sonarbangla-1 and inbred rice BRRI dhan33 and (iii) eight seedling ages, namely 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 days. The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot design accommodating planting method in the main plots, variety in the sub-plots and seedling age in the sub-sub-plots with three replications. Maturity of crop was determined when some 90% of the grains became golden yellow in colour. Five hills were selected randomly from each unit plot and uprooted before harvesting for recording necessary data. After sampling the whole plot was harvested at maturity (on different dates in October, 2002). Grains were cleaned and sun dried to moisture content of 12%. Straws were sun dried properly. Finally grain and straw yields plot-1 were recorded and converted to t ha-1. The collected data were analyzed following the ANOVA technique and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test using a computer package MSTAT

The findings showed that planting method influenced most of the crop characters under study. The total number of tillers hill-1 , number of effective tillers hill-1, number of grains panicle-1 number of sterile spikelets panicle-1 and 1000-grain weight were higher in SRI planting method than those in conventional planting method. Variable effects of planting method on total number of tillers hill-1 Interaction effect of variety and seedling age was significant in respect of panicle length, grains and sterile spikelets panicle-1 were significantly influenced by the interaction of variety and seedling age. Sonarbangla-1 showed better performance when 15-day- old seedling was transplanted under SRI practice. Of the two varieties studied Sonarbangla-1 performed better regarding grain yield due to longer panicle, higher number of grains panicle- 1 and 1000-grain weight. In SRI practice, the requirement of inputs (seed rate) are lower than conventional method but it is associated with increased productivity of rice. SRI practice will not be applicable invariably every where. Where water control is limited and irrigation water can not be managed properly, SRl is less productive. As such, the SRI approach offers excellent opportunities, particularly for the diverse and location specific production system of small farmers who desperately need to achieve both higher yields and increased net profits. During aman season both SRI and conventional practices were found to be responsive to seedling age. Higher number of effective tillers hill-1 and higher grain yield were obtained from younger seedlings than older ones. However, further studies are necessary at different agro ecological zones to arrive at a definite conclusion and recommendation.
