A Study of Flower and Pod Production in Short Duration Pigeonpea Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh (24°75'N, 90°50'E) during the period from December 1999- April 2000 to pod and flower production. Floral abscission, dry matter (OM) production and portioning into different plant pans, and their relation with yield and yield attributes in four of short duration pigeonpea. Results revealed that total number of 45 and 190, and total number of flowers/plant varied between 343 and 2096 while percentage of floral abscission varied between 69 and 94. The pod yield/plant varied between 35 and 119 among the genotypes studied. It was observed that in genotype SD-13, greater DM perhaps produced higher TDM. Results conclude that (i) genotypic variation in sink (raceme and flower) production and floral abcission, and (ii) increased sink production ma) he used as a selection criteria for improved yield in short duration pigeonpea

Objectives:

To observe the pod and flower production of the pigeonpea.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of the department of Crop Botany. Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from November, 1999 to April, 2000. The experimental plant materials included twenty determinate pigeonpea genotypes. These varieties were collected from International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), India, through a research project (1998) conducted by Dr. Md. Solaiman Ali Fakir, Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, the eight genotypes were selected from the twenty genotypes. Urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and Muriate of Potash (MP) were used as source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium respectively. Moreover. well decomposed cowdung (CD) was also applied to the plots. The field experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The total experimental plot was divided into three blocks. Each block was then subdivided into 20 plots where 20 treatments (20 genotypes) were allotted at random, each plot representing one genotype. The blocks were 2 m apart and the distance between unit plot was 0.5 m. Thus, there were 60 (20x3) unit plots altogether in the experiment. The size of the plot was 4 m X 0.5 m. The plots were separated by 0.5 m wide drain. The plots were raised up to 15 cm from the soil surface.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results, it was observed that SD-13 was a high yielding genotype. The genotype SD-13, with thicker and wider tap root, greater root mass, may be more suitable under drought condition since increased root growth had been advocated as an index of better growth under drought condition (Chloupek and Rod, 1992; Umaharan, 1990). Further, it may be concluded that increased number of sink (raceme and flower) production may be used as an index of selection criterion for higher pod yield in short duration pigeonpea.
