Resource Use Efficiency of BRRIdhan-29 Boro Paddy Production at Sherpur District in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to examine the effect of various input uses and to estimate the resource use efficiency in the production of BRRidhan 29. The investigation was based on a sample survey of randomly selected 80 BRRidhan-29 growers under Sherpur district. Statistical tests (t-test), as well as some functional input-output analysis were made to analyze and interpret the data. The results of the study indicated that the return of BRRidhan-29 was positively related with the inputs- power tiller, transplanting labour, urea, Gypsum, Zinc, pesticides and carrying .The productivity effects of power tiller, transplanted labour, Gypsum, Zinc, pesticides and carrying were positive whereas hired labour, O seed, TSP, MP and irrigation were negative and statistically significant. The study also exposed that in general, the farmers were not habituated of using their inputs efficiently.

Objectives:

To know whether technological improvements has brought any change in the input use. So the present study was undertaken to estimating relationship of inputs productivity, resources use efficiency and return to scale in the production of BRRidhan-29.

Methodology:

Data for the present study were collected in 2005 from selected farmers of six villages namely Munshir Char, Kamarer Char, Baghar Char, Char Sherpur and Bolayer Char of Sherpur sadar district in Bangladesh. Eighty BRRidhan-29 Bore paddy producers were selected "by using random sampling technique. Primary data were collected by using structure questionnaire through direct interview technique during May to June 2005 by researcher himself. Data were collected with the help of a pre-tested, pre-designed questionnaire. The Statistical techniques were used to analysis the collected data.

Achievement/Findings:

The productivity effects of power tiller, transplanted labour, Gypsum, Zinc, pesticides and carrying were positive whereas hired labour, seed, TSP, MP and irrigation were negative and statistically significant. The study also exposed that in general, the farmers were not habituated of using their inputs efficiently. It was evident from the findings that the farmers have an ample scope to increase the output by judicious and extended allocation of power tiller, transplanted labour, urea, Gypsum, Zinc, pesticides and carrying. So, it can be concluded that the BRRidhan-29 growers were not observed efficient in terms of resource allocation for yield improvement. Profit can be possible to increase through efficient utilization of production inputs.
