This study determined the quality of power plant disposal water of Ashuganj Agro irrigation Project area under Brahmanbaria district by collecting 22 water samples. The pH, electrical conductivity (EC), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium bicarbonate (RSBC), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), permeability index (PI) and magnesium adsorption ratio (MAR) of the samples were determined by chemical analysis. The power plant disposal water was classified for irrigation purpose based on these properties. Eight soil samples were collected from eight representative sites of the irrigation project and their physico-chemical properties were determined by chemical analysis. The concentrations of sodium, calcium, potassium, copper and magnesium in the water samples were within the recommended standards for irrigation. All the water samples were good both in respect of pH and electrical conductivity, normal in respect of sodium adsorption ratio, satisfactory in respect of residual sodium bicarbonate, permissible in respect of soluble sodium percentage and good in respect of permeability index. The water samples were slight to moderately hard on the basis of total hardness (TH). In respect of physico-chemical properties of the soil samples, values of pH were slightly in acidic range. Electrical conductivity, sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and organic carbon (OC %) of the soils were in suitable range. Total nitrogen content (N %) of the soil samples was high, phosphorus (P) content was very low and sulphur (S) content was moderate. It may be inferred that the power plant disposal water of Ashuganj Agro-irrigation project is suitable for irrigation purpose.

To determine the water quality of Ashuganj power plant disposal water for irrigation.

The study was. conducted during October 2005 to January 2006 at Ashuganj Agro irrigation Project of Brahmanbaria to determine the quality of power plant disposal water for irrigation. Twenty two samples of the power plant disposal water were collected in dry and clean plastic bottles, each of volume 100 ml, to determine their suitability for irrigation. Care was taken so that no air could enter into the bottles. The samples were labeled and transferred to the Humboldt Soil Testing Laboratory of the Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, for chemical analysis. The disposal water samples were analysed for pH, EC, Na, K, Ca, Mg, S, C03, HC03, NH4-N, and N03 to determine their quality. Soil samples were collected from eight representative sites of the irrigation project from a depth of up to 15 em. The samples were stored in a cool place and analysed for pH, EC, Na, K, Ca, Mg, S, P, total N (%)and OC (%)to determine their quality.

The total sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper varied from 1.38 to 2.11, 0.60 to 2.13, 0.70 to 1.60, 0.448 to 2.462, 0.144 to 0.620, 0.003 to 0.049 and 0.027 to 0.072 meL- l, respectively . The concentration of most of the cations was above the recommended limits for irrigation use except zinc and copper. The recommended maximum value of magnesium in irrigation water is 0 to 0.5 meL-1 . Carbonate and bi-carbonate concentrations varied from 0.40 to 0.70 mel-1 and 3.90 to 5.20 meL-1 , respectively . The anion concentrations were below the recommended maximum limits for irrigation water . The pH of disposal water samples of the power plant varied from 6.72 to 7.15 , which were practically neutral to slightly alkaline. Suitable range of pH in irrigation water is from 6.0 to 8.5 . The pH values were well within the normal range of irrigation quality. Although pH is not directly related to soil, plant and animal health, but has been applied widely and successfully over many years to ensure the wholesomeness of water. The EC of the power plant disposal water samples was in the range of 420 to 650 µS cm-1.  Total nitrogen content ranged from 0.03 to 0.15 %. The sulphur content of the samples ranged from 18.22 to 25.57  ppm. The phosphorus of the selected soil samples ranged from 3.50 to 4.72 ppm. The available sodium content of the soil samples ranged from 60.20 to 93.24 ppm. The calcium content varied from 0.70 to 1.15 ppm. The Magnesium content ranged from 1.0O to 1.50 ppm and potassium content ranged from 35 to 45 ppm. The chemical properties of a soils location-specific and since no studies were conducted in the study area it was not possible to compare the observed results for confirmity.
