Effect of Seed Maturity on Nitrogen Uptake and Protein Yield of Chickpea (cicer Arietinum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results from field experiment showed that chickpea seeds of three varieties collected at different harvesting stages when pods were yellowish with a few yellow greens (H₁), pods were light brown with a few' yellow (H₂), and pods were completely brown and dry (H₃) varied significantly among the three varieties with respect to nitrogen content and uptake, protein content and protein yield. The highest concentration of nitrogen was observed in BARI Chola-8 while the lowest was in BARI Chola-5. Nitrogen uptake and protein yield was significantly higher in BARI Chola-5 in comparison to other 2 varieties. Seeds co/leered at H₂ stage recorded higher nitrogen and protein content and protein yield.

Objectives:

To determine the effects of harvesting time on nitrogen content and uptake, protein content and protein yield of chickpea.

Methodology:

Field experiments were carried out at the Research Field of Pulse Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur, Bangladesh during period from rabi (winter) seasons of 2004-2005 and 2005-06. During rabi seasons of 2003-04 chickpea seeds of three popular varieties viz. BARI Chola-5 (V1), BARI Chola-6 (V2) and BARI Chola-8 (V3 ) were collected three times at 7 days interval, viz. i) when the maximum pods turned into yellow with a few yellow greens (H1 stage), ii) when most of the pods were light brown with a few yellow (H2 stage), and iii) when all the pods were completely brown and dry (H3 stage). The collected seeds were dried and preserved in earthen pot for quality study. Field experiments were conducted In a randomized block design considering 4 replications. Row to row and plant to plant spacing was 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Unit plot size was 3 m x 4 m. Twenty two kg N ha^-1 as urea, 22 kg P ha^-1 as triple superphosphate, 28 kg K ha^-1 as muriate of potash, 15 kg S ha^-1 as gypsum and 1 kg Zn ha^-1 as zinc oxide were used. Full dose of P, K, S, Zn and l/3'd of N were applied as basal at final land preparation. The remaining 2/3' of N were top-dressed in two equal splits at vegetative stage and at 50% flowering stage followed by irrigation. Seeds were sown in November 2004 and 2005, and harvested on 09 March 2005 and 15 March 2006. After harvesting, seeds were dried and kept for determination of nitrogen. Protein content was determined by multiplying %N with the conventional factor 6.25. Data were statistically analyzed following IRRISTAT package programme.

Achievement/Findings:

Nitrogen content: The variety BARI Chola-8 differed significantly in nitrogen content over the other two varieties. The highest nitrogen content (3.08% in 2004-05 and 3.11 % in 2005-06) was observed in BARI Chola-8. Shahjahan (2003) observed that chickpea contained 3.53-4.0241 nitrogen content. Protein yield in seeds varied significantly among the varieties. The highest protein yield in seed was observed in BARI Chola-5 (205 kg ha^-1 in 2004-05 and 197 kg ha^-1 in 2005-06). The protein yield was significantly lower in BARI Chola-8 in comparison to other two varieties. Data indicated that protein yield in seeds collected at H₂ stage was greater (201 kg ha-1 in 2004-05 and 202 kg ha- 1 in 2005-06) than that of H₃ or H_1. Interaction of variety and harvesting stage was significant in protein yield. The highest protein yield was found in V1 H₂, while the lowest in V₃H₁.
