Genetic Variability and Path Analysis in Groundnut (arachis Hypogaea Linn.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Variability, character association and path coefficient analysis were studied for ten yield and yield components in twenty nine diverge genotypes of groundnut. High genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation accompanied with high heritability and genetic advances in percentage of mean were obtained from nut yield per plant, primary branches per plant, secondary branches per plant, plant height, I 00-nut weight and I 00- kernel weight. Nut yield per plant had high, significant and positive genotypic and phenotypic associations with days to flowering, nuts per plant, plant height, I 00 nut weight and I 00-kernel weight while the character was significantly and negatively associated with days to maturity and kernels per nut at genotypic level only. Path analysis revealed that days to flower, I 00- nut weight, secondary branches per plant, primary branches per plant and plant height had high and positive direct effects while nuts per plant, days to maturity and I 00-kernel weight had negative direct effects toward nut yield per plant.

Objectives:

To find out the genetic variability, interrelationships among different characters and the direct and indirect contributions of these characters toward yield.

Methodology:

Twenty nine diverge genotypes of groundnut were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications during the rabi season of 1992-93 at Regiomil Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong.. The unit plot size was 2 x 2m. The inter and intra row spacings were maintained at 40 and 15 em, respectively. Normal cultural practices were followed to raise the crop. Date were collected from ten randomly selected plants from each plot for plant height (PH) in em., primary branches per plant (PB), secondary branches per plant (SB), nuts per plant (NP), kernels per nut (KN) and nut yield per plant (YP) in g and the averages were used for analysis. Data were also recorded on 100 nut weight (NW) in g, 100 kernel weight (KW) in g from100 randomly selected nuts and kernels of every plots. Data on days to flower (OF) and days tomaturity (OM) were taken on plot basis. Genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic (PCV) co-efficient of variations were estimated using the formula of Burton (1952). Broad sense heritability (Hb) and genetic advance in percentage of mean (GA) were estimated following the formula suggested by Johnson et a!. ( 1955) and Lush (1949), respectively. Genotypic (rG) and phenotypic (rr) correlation co-efficient were estimated according to the formula suggested by Hanson e / a!. (1956). Path coefficient analysis was done following the formula of Dewey and Lu ( 1959).

Achievement/Findings:

The study indicated that plant height, and I 00-nut weight had high genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation accompanied with high heritability and genetic advances in percentage of mean. These characters also had significant and positive correlations with nut yield per plant and high positive direct effect on nut yield per plant. Therefore emphasis should be given on these traits when one goes for the improvement of nut yield in groundnut. .
