Variability and Genetic Association in Cigarette Tobacco (nicotina Tabacum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study with 17 cigarette tobacco genotypes was conduced at the Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur during 1990-91 to 1992-93. Genotype-environment interaction, variability, interrelationship and path coefficients of seven traits were studied. AI the characters showed highly significant difference among the genotypes, years and genotype-year interaction. All the characters showed high GCV except l ength per leaf. Broad sense heritability (l-Ib) for green weight (92.36), plant height (87.24), cured weight (78. 75), total number of leaves (77.23), and useful number of leaves (75.80), were high. The useful number of leaves exhibited the highest genetic advance in percentage of mean (GAPM) followed by plant height, green weight, total number of leaves, cured weight and breadth per leaf. Correlation studies showed that cured wight had significant p<;>sitive genotypic correlation (rg) with all the characters except l ength per leaf. Highest direct positive effect was obtained from useful number of leaves, green weight and plant height. The study suggested that useful number of leaves, green weight, plant height and breadth per leaf were the most important characters to improve the cured leaf yield to tobacco.

Objectives:

To investigate the genotype-environment interaction, variability, interrelationships among different characters and the direct and indirect contributions of these characters towards yield of tobacco leaves.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur using 17 selected cigarette tobacco genotypes in three consecutive cropping seasons of 1990-91 to 1992-93 in a randomized complete block des ign with three replications. The unit plot size was 6 m x 3 m . The inter and intra row spacings maintained were 75 em and 60 em, respectively. Normal cultural practices were followed during the period of experimentation. Data from 10 randomly selected plants were recorded on plant height, total number of leaves, useful number of leaves, length per leaf (em) and breadth per leaf (em). Green weight in kg per plot was recorded and later converted into kg per hectare and cured weight in kg per plot was recorded from air cured green weight in kg per plot which was also converted into kg per hectare. The genetic parameters are calculated from the replicated data of three years. Genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic (PCV) coefficients of variation were estimated using the formula given by Burton and De Vane (1953). Heritability (Hb) in broad sense and genetic advance in percentage of mean (GAPM) were calculated according to the formula given by Hanson et al. (1956). Genotypic (rg) and phenotypic (rp) correlations were obtained using the formula suggested by Al-Jibouri et al. ( 1958) and path coefficient analysis was done following the method outlined by Wright ( 1934).

Analysis of variance showed significant difference among the genotypes, years and genotype x year interaction in respect of all the characters . This result is, however, showed conformity with that of Patwary ( 1991 ). All the characters showed higher GCV except plant height A small difference between PCV and GCV was indicative of less environmental influence and that selection of these characters should be effective. Dobhalet al. (1989) also reported that similar findings. The highest Hb was recorded for green weight (92.36) followed by plant height (87.24), cured weight (78.57), total number of leaves (77.23) and useful number of leaves (75.80). Nizamuddin et al. (1983) also recorded maximum Hb value for number for number of leaf (96), yield per plant (86), plant height (87) and leaf width (83). High GAPM was recorded for usefuI numbers of leaves (37.67), plant height (37.29), green weight (37.05), total number of leaves (30.25), cured weight (20.61) and breadth per leaf (11 .56). This results on high Hb and high GAPM in the 'study of leaf weight and plant height were in agreement with the findings of Chaubey et a!. ( 1990). Panse ( 1957) reported that the characters which have high Hb value along with GA is due to additive gene effects.
