Variability in Land Races of Lentil (lens Culinaris Medik)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Traditional vanet1es, primitive cultivars and land races are still used in cultivation in Bangladesh. The lentil yield is very low although yield increase is the ultimate objective of a breeding programme. Identification of yield contributing characters is necessary to establish a successful breeding programme to develop high yielding varieties. Information of genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance and correlations are useful to formulate selection criteria for improvement of yield. Therefore, this study was undertaken to determine variability and correlations for yield and yield contributing characters in lentil in isolation or combination as selection criteria.

Objectives:

To determine variability and correlations for yield and yield contributing characters in lentil in isolation or combination as selection criteria.

Methodology:

Seventeen land races along with one local improved variety, L-5 were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications at experimental farm BARI, Joydebpur, in 1991- 92. Each plot comprised of 4 rows of 5 meter long spaced 50 and 5 em apart between rows and plants, respectively. Five random plants from each plot were selected for recording observations on i) plant height, ii) no. of branches/plant, iii) no. of seeds/pod, iv) grain yield/plan.t and days to 50% flowering. The components of variance, heritability (broad sense), genetic advance and correlation coefficients were worked out following standard statistical procedures.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that the seed yield/plant was positively and significantly correlated (P 0.0 I) with number of pods/plant and plant height. The number of pods/plant appeared to be the most important component of yield. All the other attributes except for I 00-seed weight exerted positive but non-significant effect on grain yield and this finding agreed with earlier workers (Raj put and Sarwar, 1989 and Sarwar et a!., 1982). Seed size (I 00-seed weight) had s hown significantly negative association with number of seeds/pod indicated that the more the number of seeds/pod the smaller the seed size (Rajput and Sarwar, 1989). Selection for either trait will have adverse effect on the other resulting in character compensation. Induced mutation may be helpful in breaking such negative correlation. Plant height had shown significantly positive correlation with pods/plant indicated that tall plants will bear more number of pods.
