A pot experiment was conducted with the view to explore the potential of textile and dyeing industrial sludge (55) on yield and as a source of nitrogen. The distribution pattern of nitrogen and its content in different plan1 pare s of red amaranth at 30 and 42 days after sowing (DAS) was observed. The study was carried out in a completely randomized design comprising six treatments with different rates of urea and industrial sludge nitrogen and a control. Soil, industrial sludge and plant samples such as root, stem and leaf, were analyzed. Among the plant parts stem showed the highest dry weight (0.810g plant-1 at the highest rate of urea-N at 42 DAS and root showed the lowest dry weight (0.012g plant-1 in control at 30 DAS. The dry weight trend was found in the order of stem>leaf >roof bach at 30 and 42 DAS. Nitrogen content in different plant pares was observed higher at 30 DAS compared to 42 DAS with higher races of urea-N in treatment combinations. The distribution pattern of nitrogen content identified as leaf>stem>root both at 30 and 42 DAS. The highest N uptake by shoot was found 13.00 mg plant-1 ( 17.16 k g ha-1) and 24.67 mg plant-1 (30.52 kg ha-1) by treatment consisting of U N100 + S SN0 at 30 and 42 DAS respectively. The effects of the treatments on fresh yield were statistically different over control. Treatment consisting of UN100 + SSN0 recorded the highest fresh field both at 30 and 42 DAS. The treatment combination 100% UN+ 0% S SN showed highest nee benefit return at 42 DAS, which was economically viable and acceptable to the farmers. Industrial sludge was comparatively suitable for longer (42 DAS) than that of shorter (30 DAS) growth period owing to its slow release nature of nitrogen.

To explore the  potential of industrial sludge as source of nitrogen and  other nutrient for crop production

A pot experiment was conducted in a nethouse of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI).  Joydebpur, Gazipur, Bangladesh. Soil was silt y clay loam belonging to Chhiata series  in the Bangladesh Soil Classification System.  Industrial sludges (Ss) were collected  from 'Islam dyeing'  and  'Dundy dyeing industry  at  Konabari,  Gazipur and   Badsha, Niki and mixed sludge of textile  and dyeing industry  at Katchpur, Narayanganj. The test crop was red amaranth (Amaranthus gangeticus L.), variety "BARI Lalshak-1",  which  is a common and popular leafy vegetable in Bangladesh. The variety 'BARI Lalshak-1' is a short duration crop with a growth period of 40 to 45 days. It can provide a significant amount of protein, iron and vitamin. It is commonly grown almost everywhere including sludge contaminated areas round the year. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replications. Six treatment combinations  were UN100 +  SSNO ( 100% recommended  dose of urea-N and 0% industrial s1udge-N), U N75 + SsNzs (75% urea-N  and 25 % industrial sludge-N), UNso + SsNso (50% urea N and  50%  industrial sludge- N ), UN75 + SSN25  (75%  urea-N and 75 %  industrial sludge-N), UNo + SSN100 (0% urea-N and 100  % industrial  sludge-N) and  UNo+ SsNo (control). Red amaranth was grown in pot. The surface area of each pot was 0.02m2 containing 6.0 kg of soil and Ss. Nitrogen  (N), ph osphorous (P) and potassium ( K) were applied at the rate  of  250, 40  and  112.5 kg/ha,  respectively. Soils were sampled initially, intermittently and after harvesting the crop. Three soil columns were collected  from each  pot using  a core sampler to the depth of  20  cm  and make  them  composite. Then these samples   were air-dried, ground,   sieved and stored in labeled polythene bags and then analyzed in laboratory. Plant height was measured at 30 and 42 DAS, i.e. just prior to harvesting  up to the apical bud  and  average   height  was  recorded. The plants were then uprooted, properly washed and leaves, stems and roots were separated.  Both fresh and oven dry weights  were recorded  after drying  first in the air  and  then  in an oven  for 72  hours  at 65 °C. These samples were separately ground, sieved and stored in labeled polythene bags and then analyzed.

Industrial sludge was comparatively suitable for longer (42 DAS) than that of shorter (30 DAS) growth period owing to its slow release nature of nitrogen.Industrial sludge (Ss) was not comparable in terms of its nutrient content with that of urea. However in this experiment, results suggest that Ss had little influence on  fresh  and dry yield production and in N content of plant parts. There was no immediate benefit of red amaranth cultivation for its short-term fast growth habit production and of slow  release of nutrients released from S5.
