Seni or Scientific Officer, Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Rahmatpur, Barisal

The  field  experiment   was  conducted at  the  Regional  Agricultural   Research  Station,  Rahmatpur, Barisal in rabi season of two consecutive  years of 2001-2002 and 2002-2003  with a view to determine  the effects of different combinations  of zinc (Zn), boron (B) and copper (Cu) nutrients on bulb yield, storability and economic return of onion in the study area. The soil of the experimental  area belongs  to the Ganges Tidal Floodplain Alluvium  Tract under AEZ-13. The Zn,  Band  Cu nutrients consisted  of eleven treatment combinations  namely  Zn0B1Cu1, Zn2.5 B1Cu1,   Zn5B1Cu1   Zn7.5 B1Cu1,  Zn5 B2Cu1  Zn5B3Cu1,  Zn5 B1Cu0,  Zn5B1Cu2,  kg/ha. Different  plant  characters like  plant  height,  leaf length, pseudostem  length,  horizontal and  vertical diameters, single bulb weight and bulb  yield of onion were differed  significantly   due  to application  of  different  treatment combinations. Of  the  treatment combinations, the maximum bulb yield ( 16.68 tlha) was obtained with the treatment Zn5B2 Cu1 kg/ha due to production of largest horizontal  and  vertical  diameters  (4.74  and  4.35 cm, respectively)  and heaviest single bulb ( 36.42 cm) of onion by the treatment.

To determine the effects  of Zn,  B and Cu  on  onion  yield , storability and economic return  in the southern region  of Bangladesh

The field experiment was carried out at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal  during the rabi  seasons of 2001-2002 to  2002-2003. The soil of the experimental area belongs to the Ganges Tidal Floodplain Alluvium Tract under AEZ-13. Before planting  of onion  the composite soil  samples (0-15 cm  depth) were collected from the experimental field  for  determining  the initial nutrient status of the soils. Initially all the experimental   plots were applied  of N 100 P80  K 100 S20  kg/ha  as a blanket dose in the form of urea, triple  super   phosphate, muriate of  potash  and  gypsum, respectively. Then different  l eve ls  of micronutrients (Zn,  B and  Cu) were applied  according the treatment specifications w hi c h consisted  of  four   levels  of  Zn  (0,  2.5,  5.0 and  7.5  kg/ha),   four   levels  of  B (0,  l, 2  and  3 kg/ha) and four  levels  of Cu  (0,  I,  2 and  3 kg/ha). The whole amounts of P, K, S, Zn, B and Cu and I /3'd urea were applied   at the time of final  land preparation. The remaining 2/3'd urea were applied in two equal installments at 3rd and 5tth   week after transplanting as top dressing. Onion   seedlings of 45 days old of BARI Peaj-1 variety were transplanted in consecutive two years on 4 November, 200I and 5 November 2002, respectively. The plant spacing was row-to-row 20 cm and plant-to-plant distance was I 0 cm. After transplanting, all the intercultural operations were done for proper growth and development of onion plants.  Bolting was discouraged by nipping off the flower stalks.  Plant sampling was done at different intervals (50,   65   and   80   OAT)   to   take   growth related   parameters. The onion bulb was harvested on 4 April 2002 and 6 April  2003 in two consecutive years, respectively. Before  harvesting, ten  plants   were  randomly selected  from  each  plot for  recording different  plant characters like  plant height, number of  leaves/plant, leaf  length, horizontal  and  vertical   diameter of  bulb, pseudo stem length and diameter,  weight   of  single   bulb etc. The  bulb  yield  was taken  plotwise  and  then converted into ton per hectare: Then  the onion bulbs were stored on bamboo racks into a room to study  the impacts of micronutrients on storability. During the storing g period cumulative weight and rotten loss of bulbs/plot were recorded and converted into percentage. The data were analyzed statistically and the means were separated by Duncan's   Multiple Range  Test.

During the storage of onion bulb, the lowest cumulative weight loss (25.66  o/o) was observed  in Zn 7.5B 1Cu1 kglha and the highest (45.76 o/o) was found in Zn0B1Cu1 kg/ha at 180 days after storage. The maximum gross  return  (Tk 66750.00/ha),  gross  margin  (Tk 154070.18/ha) and benefit cost ratio ( 12.15) were provided by Zn5 B2 Cu1 kg/ha followed by Zn5B3 Cu1 k/lha (Tk 157250.00 and 143511.78/ha, respectively)  but  the  treatment  Zn5B1 Cu1  kg/ha  provided the  second highest benefit cost ratio (11.86). On the contrary, the lowest gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio (Tk 58850.00,  49609.00/ha  and 5.37, respectively)  were contributed  by Zn0B0Cu0  kg/ha. Therefore, the two years experiment  concluded  that from the economic  point of view the suitable  fertilizer dose for onion cultivation  is  Zn5 B2 Cu1  kg/ha  (plus N 100Px 80K 10oS 20   kg/ha)  in  the  soil  under  study and  in its extrapolation area under the southern region of Bangladesh.
