Effect of Dyeing Parameters on Dyeing of Knitted Fabrics with Remazol Dye

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This research work was carried out in the lab of Hoechst Bangladesh Ltd., Dhaka, in 2004. 100% cotton knitted fabric were dyed with reactive dyes with a view to optimizing the dyeing procedure of knit goods by varying dyeing conditions like material-liquor ratio (M:L R), temperature, alkali concentration etc.The M:L R, temperature and alkali concentration were 1 :5,1 :20 & 1 :30; 40⁰C, 60⁰C & 80⁰C and (2.5g/L, 5g/L & 15g/L) respectively. It was observed that dye exhaustion % was increased with decrease of M:LR and increase of temperature and applied alkali concentration.

Objectives:

To minimize the dyestuffs and also produces less water pollution as the effluent contain minimum amount of dye.

Methodology:

Cotton knitted fabric was dyed in Winch dyeing machine applying exhaust dyeing method. Remazol dye was applied at various temperatures, M:L ratio and alkali concentration. After pretreatment and through washing of the goods the pre-dissolved dyestuff was added to the bath at room temperature (4). The dyestuff was spread uniformly on the goods by circulating them for at least 10 to 15 minutes and salt was added. The required amount of alkali (in solution form) was added to the bath after another 10 to 15 minutes interval. Then 20 minutes after the alkali was added, the bath was heated within 30 minutes to the desired dyeing temperature.

Achievement/Findings:

So, test results revealed that better results would be achieved at low M:L ratio and optimum temperature that would be direct impact on cost effective benefit.
