A total of 45 composite  soil samples representing 15 soil  series  were collected  from different  land types, viz. high, medium high and low land of Madhupur tract for the studies of micro-nutrient  status. Iron, Manganese, Copper, Zinc and Boron were determined by Spectrophotometer and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. Iron content  was very high in all soils irrespective  of land types and the ranges of average values were 144 - 44, 270- 82 and 303 -148 µg/g for high land, medium  high land, and low land soils, respectively. Manganese  content was also very high in all soils, however, Karail (238 µg/g), Khilgaon (LL) (189 µg/g) and Tejgaon (159 µg/g) soils showed  the three  highest  quantities of available  Mn. Copper content was very high in all but Karail (0.33 µg/g)  and Gerua (0.60  µg/g) soils. Zinc and Boron contents varied widely from very high (3.40 µg/g for Zn and 1.07 µg/g for B) to low for Zn (0.53 µg/g) and very low for B (0.10 µg/g).  The study indicates the possibilities of zinc and boron deficiency in some high and medium high land soils of Madhupur Tract.

To investigate the distribution of  Iron,  Manganese, Copper,  Boron and  Zinc  in soils developed  under  different drainage conditions of Madhupur Tract.

The distribution of soils of the Madhupur tract located in different Upazilas of Bangladesh is presented and 2. Soil series have been recognized in this phyosiographic unit (RSS Staff, 1967) which are distributed among 22 Upazila of 8 Districts. The formation is generally almost horizontal but has been broken into a number of fault blocks, some of which are slightly tilted. Fifteen soil series were selected from Kapasia, Sripur, Gazipur Sadar, and Valuka Upazilas of Gazipur and Mymensingh Districts.  Selected soil series  are Tejgaon, Belabo,  Noadda,   Bhatpara, Gerua,  Chandra,   Payati,  Chhiata,   Karail,  Genda, Naga,  Kalma  (MHL),  Kalma  (LL),  Khilgaon (MHL),  and  Khilgaon  (LL).  A  total  of  45 composite  top soil samples were collected (3 samples  from  each  series)  for  physical  and chemical analyses. Collected samples were dried in the shadow, grinded and passed through a 2 mm sieve. High   Land   (HL) -Land  which  is  above normal flood level and where water can be retained on  the  land  surface  within  field  bunds  for  more than 1-2 days. Tejgaon , Belabo,  Noadda, Bhatpara and Gerua series were under this category. Medium  High  Land  (MHL)  - Land  which is normally  flooded  up to about 90 cm depth  during the  rainy  season  for  more  than  2  weeks continuously. Khilgaon (MHL), Kalma (MHL), Chandra, Payati, and Chhiatta series were under this category. Low Land   (LL) and Medium Low Land (MLL)  -  Land   which  is normally flooded to between 180 and 275 cm depth for a few months during the 1lood season, recognized as Low Land and between 90 and 180 cm flood depth recognized as Medium Low Land. Khilgaon  (LL),   Kalma (LL), Karail, Genda and Naga series were under this category. Soil pH was determined by glass  electrode  pH  meter  from  extract  of soil and water ratio of I: 2.5.  Texture was determined by hydrometer method (Bouyoucos,  1962) and USDA triangular diagram. Organic carbon was determined by wet-oxidation method. In case of micronutrient  analysis DTPA  extraction method was followed for determination of Fe,  Mn, Cu & Zn by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and for boron determination hot water extraction method  (Berger   and Truog, 1944)   was  used  and subsequently determined by Spectrophotometer.

The   present study was confined to  general discussion on available micronutrients  status of some  Madhupur tract soils  in  relation  to drainage conditions of seasonal  flood water. Total analysis of micronutrient elements in these soils will provide more information about  their  contents  in soils. However, the findings of present studies indicates that Madhupur tract  soils  are rich in Fe, Mn and Cu under  three  drainage conditions. Zinc and  B are  deficient in some soils irrespective of land types.
