Collection, Characterization and Conservation of Cotton Germplasms

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Center, Rangpur during the year 2013-14 to characterize the eight collected lines. Significant difference was found among the treatments for all yield and yield contributing characters. The highest seed cotton yield was produced by JA-10/J (2.92 t/ha) which was followed by CB-12 (2.82 t/ha) respectively. The lowest seed cotton yield was found in JA-11/M (2.03 t/ha) which was followed by Ra-16 (2.09 t/ha). All the germplasms gave lower yield than the control except JA-10/J. Accession JA-10/J produced 3% higher seed cotton yield and 2% higher lint yield than control CB-12. The ginning out turn (GOT %) percentage was found within the range of 34.13 to 42.18 %.

Objectives:

To compare the performance of eight new cotton genotypes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Center, Rangpur during the season 2013-14. Eight collected Genotypes encoded BC-0492, BC-0493, BC-0494, BC-0495, BC-0496, BC-0497, BC-0498, BC-0499 and one local check variety CB-12 were included in this experiment. Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications was followed. Seeds of each entry were sown one row in each plot. Unit plot size was 10 m X 0.9 m. Plant spacing was 90 cm X 90 cm.Passport data, qualitative and quantative data were collected according to the rules of IPGRC. To evaluate the germ plasms agronomic data such as number of vegetative branches per plant, node number of first fruiting branch, number of primary fruiting branches per plant, secondary fruiting branches per plant, days to first flowering, days to first boll split, plant height at harvest, number of bolls per plant, single boll weight, seed cotton yield per plant and seed cotton yield per plot were recorded. In all cases, data were collected from ten randomized plants of each row. Mean data of the treatments were used for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Passport data, qualitative data, agronomic (quantative) data with different statistical analyses and ginning data have been shown. Accession number from BC-0492 to BC-0499 was shown. Three accessions were obtained by different hybridization or others research program at Cotton Research Center, Rangpur, Two accessions obtained from Cotton Research, Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Jagodishpur, Jessore, One from Sreepur Farm, one from Lal Teer Seed Company Limited and one from ACI Seed Company Limited. All collected germplasm were under the specis hirsutum (tetraploid 2n=52). This was the first time of seed multiplication and 100 g selfed seeds of each treatment were kept in the “Gene Bank”. it was seen that four treatments showed erect, rest four treatments showed prosted growth habit. All accession, green colour plants, smooth and entire leaf shape were found. Light yellow petal colour, petal spot absent in all accession. Cream pollen colour were found except accession number Bc-0497. All accession showed boll shape round, seed fuzzy and lint colour white. The seed cotton yield and yield contributing characters were statistically differences in all over the treatments are presented .
